| Funny, that is exactly why I replaced my 2Wire gateway with the DGN2200 18 months or so ago. My DGN 2200 has been rock-solid (knock on wood!).
Do you have any other router/modem to try in its place? Although of course it can be the Netgear, it equally may be an issue with your dsl signal itself.
I had a very similar problem, after years of great connectivity, that turned out to be an issue at the CO which AT&T had to repair. If a different modem or gateway exhibits the same problem, then that may be the issue. Hard to tell without taking trouble-shooting steps first.
