Re: Wideband 30/5 Now Available in NYC Area oh... the way it sounds ..at least to us here in the midwest ...all of NY and pretty much most of the northeast is lit up minus boston (which is bizarre to say the least).
What will RR do when verizon gets to your neighborhood?
Where verizon is ... how does the competition fare against it?
Hope you guys don't mind me intruding on your discussion. |

 | FIOS isn't just limited, it's EXTREMELY rare in manhattan. I don't know anyone living in the city who has FIOS, and I work in IT. Obviously we'd all instantly switch if it was available. |
|
 | What's funny is I did not have 30/5 until Verizon started putting FIOS in my area. Now I have 30/5 and could not be happier. I may goto Verizon Fios, maybe not. I live in Southern California and the 30/5 is pretty damn fast. The bill is roughly $65 a month and the comparable Fios Package 25/15 is about $85. I may keep TWC. 30/5 is fast enough for what I do (mainly game online Consoles & PC) and general PC stuff (Surf Web, E-Mail, Wireless Connection) |

jh2010 join:2009-09-03 Brooklyn, NY | reply to Night0wl For those of you with your own SB6120. have you been able to login to your cable modem after the upgrade to 30/5. I don't know what the password is. |
|
 | You can't login, they completely lock it down. Your only option is to get the device put in bridge mode and buy another router. |

jh2010 join:2009-09-03 Brooklyn, NY | reply to Night0wl An SB6120 is just a cable modem. I already have my own router. |
|
 | reply to Night0wl Ahh my mistake. I would assume they apply a profile that locks it down also, but you can try calling in and escalating to level3 tech support to see if they'll let you access your device, since you own it. Worth a shot. |

 | reply to Night0wl I live in Queens, near to a Verizon office / parking lot for their vans. No signs of Fios being put in my area, as it was said before Fios availability is spotty and it seems that they are installing it in large buildings, would not be surprised if fios is targeting these to make a contract to help pay for the installation, a friend of mine has fios in brooklyn, he says that the prices are still relatively high for being in an area with internet competitors, in his building fiber is run to each floor and then each apartment gets coax from there.
In my area TWC is the only provider and their advertised speeds for my zip are only 10Mbps down and 512Kbps up, 10Mbps down and 768Kbps up and Signature Home, 50Mbps down and 5Mbps up. I had the 512Kbps up for the longest time till I saw this thread. I'm glad that I did because I got 30/5 and its worlds of difference, monumental in fact because before i couldnt even play xbox without serious frustrating lag. |

 | reply to Night0wl Just had my install in East Elmhurst, NY. Took about 20 min, a lot of time spent waiting on the phone with main office. The modem/router is a SBG6580, they already had Wifi disabled on it as I instructed them when I placed the order. Plugged into Port 1 is my DIR-655 with QoS enabled. Here's the proof:

PS: Thanks Night0wl for letting us know! |

| reply to Night0wl So sad My TWC franchise offers 30/5 and they say 50/20 soon, but not for my location yet. My guess is by working with cable companies in other franchises(and what I've heard through the grapevine from former TWC engineers), is that TWC runs fiber links from Albany back to Pittsfield, where there is a modest sized plant. With the way my pings trace out, the first hop(outside my personal network) lands in Albany. Albany seems to assign our DHCP and do all network operations(including DNS), while the small plant here handles all the RF components and just sends it directly on its merry way over the fiber links. Probably why they historically have great pings, despite the first hop being about 35-50(depending where in Albany) miles away.
So, the point is that leaves 2 things possible as to why I can't get it
1. The local RF plant and/or local nodes can't handle DOCSIS 3 and need upgrading, if they feel it's profitable, of course
2. They feel their current fiber network backhaul would become horribly saturated and produce too many calls, if the per connection speed is boosted to that degree.
I feel it is a mix. RR has shown some signs of congestion in many local places I have seen. They still provide respectable speed and ping consistency compared with most cable operators, but certainly not what they used to spoil me with. Some peoples' FIOS pings suck compared to what I used to get, but it's now in average-high average range, with decent jitter. They now offer 1/384k, 10/1 with Powerboost, and 15/2 for residential. Up to 20/4 for business class. My modem shows they use DOCSIS 1.1 still. The congestion appears more downstream than upstream, suggesting the local nodes are likely still handling the traffic fine, despite that. Node congestion usually has upstream suffering first. So, that leaves the plant and backhaul at the present time. Though we all know trying to push Wideband speeds over DOCSIS 1.1 is a recipe for failure and disaster. So, I think both 1 and 2 come into play, unfortunately -- A fool thinks they know everything.
A wise person knows enough to know they couldn't possibly know everything.

 | I just got TWC Turbo, 15/768k, and I'm only seeing speeds up to 4-5mbps during peak time in Astoria. Is this normal? During the morning the technician came I was able to get 20 down on a speedtest.
Anything I can do? If I call and ask for the 30/5 plan, will it instantly make my speed faster? Modem is a RCA DCM425.
Thanks! |

Thanks! The Docsis 3.0 modem should def help with your speeds! |

|
 | how do i get to level 3 directly? i just had a chat with a TWC online sales rep and he said i'd need to speak to earthlink to do the upgrade. |
|
 | just called a rep and asked if i could get the wideband. she offered the 30/5 for 20 extra dollars making my bill about $62. i asked if it was possible to just sign me up for the promotion instead of having to cancel my earthlink and re-sign up. she went on hold for a while and said that she could get me the $29.95 plan and add 20 dollars making the plan $50. tech is coming to replace my rca next saturday. $40 service fee, but this was expected.
Happy ending! |
