Is it my modem?

2Wire 2701g/b modem/router (from 2001). The other day I had the following scenario:

1. Wireless laptop #1 download file at about 250 kb/sec.
2. PS3 streaming movie over LAN at 100 Mbps/sec.
3. Wireless laptop #2 playing internet with constant bottleneck. Screens would load slower than normal. Frustrating surfing experience.

Would a new modem/router solve these isues or is it an acceptable bottleneck? My 2701g/b actually works otherwise well (I think). I've never had any other modem/router so I don't know if other than "n", there's something else I'm missing out there.

Wireless connections can be affected by many factors. Some router related and some not. First make sure you are on challen 1, 6, or 11. All others overlap. Then check for interference with other wireless LANs in your area. A free download such as "inSSIDer" will give you visibility to other networks. Also check your signal strength and positioning at the laptops. If the signal strength is low, make sure your 2wire signal output is as maximum (at least to test). Also, make sure the laptop is not surrounded by metal (e.g. on a wire shelf or cart), and that there is not some interference like next to a microwave.
