Re: Distributel Internet

So I got my DCM475 today (line was provisioned by Rogers yesterday so I was without internet overnight) and I hooked it up right away. Took quite a while for the modem to sync, something like 5 minutes, but once that was done everything was smooth sailing.

First test, late morning. Speedboost obviously in effect.

This evening, way faster than previously from the same time of day. Seems like money well spent.

Overall the exchange went smoothly and speed seems more consistent this evening than previously experienced. Go DOCSIS 3.0 FTW!

The first sync takes longer as it needs to find the CMTS, initiate download of the provisioned profile, and then sync up. Any other syncs after a power failure or reboot will take seconds instead of minutes.

Have you checked to see if the modem is bonding channels? And if so, how many up and down?

Seems to me that my docsis 2.0 can handle the 24Mbps speed, but speedboost seems to be reduced to ~33Mbps.

With docsis 3.0 it looks like ~48Mbps, which seems to be similar to a friend of mine who sees the same with the 12Mbps cable on teksavvy.

All my downloads from newsgroups come in at 2.9MB/s (which is showing a 24Mbps service). What do people with a docsis 3.0 modem see (post speedboost obviously).

So, given that I am not paying for a modem rental, the question comes down to whether it is worth buying a docsis 3.0 modem to increase my speedboost....

I am currently thinking not.... but...

You got your modem in the mail after your installation date?

Is Distributel's current pricing finalized for the year or are they still int he process of updating? Is there promos in the works?

While you'll get higher speeds with speedboost, the biggest benefit may come from the channel bonding if your node is congested during peak hours. So if your speeds drop during primetime, then a DOCSIS 3 with channel bonding may help with keeping your speeds more consistent.

If your speeds are good all the time, then you don't need one just yet. But as more customers come online, you may need to upgrade to DOCSIS 3 to get better performance.

I think he meant that the replacement DOCSIS 3 modem came later?

I don't know about promos, but yes their pricing is set. The increase that other ISPs saw is reflected in the modem rental or purchase instead of a free modem rental. Last fall they had a promo to waive the installation fee, and that promo ended Dec 31.

I received my Docsis 3.0 modem today from Distributel. Too bad installation isn't until the 17th! Already hooked it up and it's ready to go, but it just isn't provisioned yet to work on Rogers so you can't get farther then the Rogers technical difficulties page. Boooo!

I did check and I'm getting 4 bonded downstream channels and 2 bonded upstream channels.

Speed is far more consistent, evening only went down to 2.3-2.5 MB/s vs 700-800 KB/s previously. Max sustained speed previously was 2.8-2.9 MB/s and now it hits 3.1-3.2 MB/s during non primetime hours. Also, my speedboost topped out about 29 Mbps previously and now its nearly 49 Mbps. So the benefit is less noticeable during off-peak hours but during primetime the benefits of the newer modem really shine through.

And yes, this was a modem exchange after the fact, my service was first installed in December.

All new installs requires a tech visit to check the line. A Rogers tech will arrive on that date to check the line and confirm the modem is connected properly. Then the tech will email that it's connected and in about 20 mins or so the CMTS will recognize the modem and download the config file and be up and running.

@satya, are these speeds only during peak or all the time? Do you have a D3 modem? I was thinking of going Distributel in Mississauga but I do not want these speeds.

Maybe you need 1 week more. Videotron will connect your cable first.
