Re: Distributel Internet

how about p2p download speed in montreal?

Distributel does not throttle any traffic, so P2P should be as fast as the connections allow, provided enough people are sharing at decent speeds.

And when it comes to network speed, it depends mostly on Rogers network since they provide the connections to the homes. If you have poor speeds on Distributel, it'll be the same on Rogers or TekSavvy or whoever.

That's not at all true.

It's partially true, if it's local node congestion than you will have issues with any cable internet provider or if it's POI congestion than you might get better results by switching to a different provider.

However if it's a mix of both than changing providers will only give you slight increase in speed.

The only actual TPIA providers in Ontario for Rogers are TekSavvy and Distributel/Acanac everyone else is just a reseller of those two.

Very true.

Distributel bought Acanac a while back but Acanac still operates as a separate company.

Thanks.

I hope Acanac can post 30M unlimited plan for Quebec in next week.

Ps, Can I buy a 6120 or 6180 on Ebay and use it in these companies ? 6120 6180 5101 need especial firmware on videotron?

If I understand this correctly......
if the congestion is at the node level than it won't matter which cable interenet ISP you use. Maybe going from a D2 modem to a D3 may help.

if the congestion is a the POI level than the speed will vary between ISPs. So slowdowns expereinced at the POI can be upgraded by the ISP themselves but node congestion could only be helped by ugrades from Rogers...correct?

Correct. Getting a D3 will help a little bit as your downloads will be spread over multiple channels, 4 or 8 depending on the modem you get.

POI capacity can be upgraded by indie ISPs in the sense that they are able to order more links but they need to wait for Rogers to install them.

Node upgrades can be done by Rogers only.

I have a question about the installation for Distributel Cable:

I am getting an install next week, and was wondering if Rogers will hook up the coax/install a splitter or do I have to do this myself?

The model is in the basement so it only requires about a 12' run and a 2 way splitter.

The Rogers tech will check the line outside for signal strength and then either install a splitter on the main line inside or offer to run a new line into your home, and attach it to your Distributel modem. He will then run a quick test to make sure it syncs up ok and that your computer is online. Once you're online, he's done. A wireless router or ethernet cable to a laptop at the install site is handy so the tech doesn't need to traipse through your home to verify the computer is online.

If you already have a cable internet setup, I suggest removing the other modem and let the tech see just the Distributel modem. If this is your first cable internet install, relax and let him do his thing.

I finally gave in and ordered the 24/1 plan, and it was installed today. Speed was great earlier around noon. But now I am only getting about 8Mbps:

So there's definitely congestion issues in my area (Scarborough). Is there any point in complaining?

Distributel = 3WEB ?

I just know Distributel = Acanac now.

I was wondering about that too. Am I even on the right network?

[Edit] Apparently yes. 3web.com takes you to distributel.ca.

Distributel bought 3WEB, CIA and bunch of other ISPs including Acanac.

It's technically Acanac = Distributel but they are still functionally separate brands.

Which modem do you have? If it's the Motorola SB510x, I suggest you order the newer DCM475 which can bond up to 8 channels to "spread out" the load and help reduce the effects of congestion. I happen to be in a good area with very little congestion, but even so the DCM475 made a marked improvement to my peak speeds. I went from ~32mbps to ~51mbps peaks when I replaced the SB5101 with the DCM475. I now have 4 channels down, 2 channels up, and I don't know if it's a placebo effect or not, but my internet "feels" a bit snappier, although the latency is the same.

Rogers tech came for my Distributel cable installation today and after checking I had a signal to the modem, he said I now have to talk to my 3rd party provider to get connected to the network. I am guessing he means having my mac address provisioned so I can get on the net?

Is this right? I mean, he's gone now and I still have no net. Am I going to have to phone Distributel or will my modem be provisioned sometime today on it's own since today was the installation date?

Thanks
