APRS on the ISS..

I had been noticing data bursts from time to time on the ISS frequency. Initially I thought it was just some bleed over. Then today I heard it when I was taking field intensity measurements way out in the middle of nowhere with that, it finally hit me that this was on freq. Even with that it still took a while for it to sink in that this might actually be coming from the ISS. I checked the orbit times and waited and sure enough as soon as the ISS came in range I started hearing the APRS farts, and 10 minutes later they faded away. Since I heard this on 2 separate passes, I think I can confirm that the ISS is operating a digipeter, and it seems to passing ground traffic. My portable wasn't receiving it well but did decode a few. What I don't know is if it's using the Voice or Data uplink frequency to feed it. I fired 2 bursts, and heard a response each time but the portable did not receive well enough to confirm that it was a response to my burst.

So if you like playing with APRS you may want to give it a try, you never know how long they will leave it set up and running.

Was this on 144.39? I'll have to try to catch it with the satellite beam antenna...

144.39 is the nationwide APRS frequency. The ISS never transmits there. They use 145.825 for their digipeater.
I've bounced packets through them using my TH-D7 and a whip antenna.

Here's some info on when I did APRS through the ISS - »www.k2dsl.com/2010/09/19/first-i···ia-aprs/

Here's some info with a voice contact I made with the ISS with Doug Wheelock - »www.k2dsl.com/2010/09/19/first-v···station/ . Was very lucky to meet Col Wheelock in Dayton this year. Terrific gentleman!

This that I heard wasn't on 145.825 as would be expected, I was hearing it on 145.800 Someone may have left the radio in the wrong mode.. who knows.

I'm going to set up my APRS radio so I can send on 144.825, 144.800 and 144.490 and see if I can figure out what it's doing, provided it's still operating.

FWIW, I haven't hear another data burst on the voice freq since I started this thread. Guess they figured it out.
