 | Wireless Connection I've been using a D-Link DWL-G132 for years to connect to the internet. Our old router and modem were hit by lightning so we bought a Westell 7500 (A90-750022-07).
I recently bought two new CISCO Valet AM10's on a Woot sale; one for a different computer and one to replace my D-Link. The D-Link USB adapter only gets about a 50% signal, so I thought the CISCO adapter might get a better signal.
I first replaced my D-Link with the AM10 and it seemed fine; 60% signal and a slight speed increase, though not enough to really necessitate the change. But, after a short time, I noticed a great deal of packet loss from the Westell to the AM10. I thought it might be defective, so I put it away and hooked the D-Link back up.
However, the other AM10, hooked into a different computer, started giving the same results. I checked the Westell wireless diagnostics and saw that there were a great deal of errors in the Out section (around 700). Perhaps this could be the cause of this packet loss?
This router only supports B/G at 54Mbps, which the AM10 supports N at 300Mbps. The help section of the Westell's wireless advanced settings says that selecting only lower rates of speed will "improve performance by reducing the number of bad packets, re-tries and time-outs".
I have at least four other devices in this house that already connect to the router wirelessly with no problems. I don't want to change the advanced settings on the router and slow those connections down, just to get this one device working.
What should I do to get the AM10 working for the other computer? Are there any settings in the router that I should change to get it working, without interfering with any of the other connections?
Or, should I just get rid of these things and buy a different USB adapter? |
