ARRIS DG950 - bridge / wireless??

Currently my house is without wireless and I'm not hearing the end of it from the nice people who live here

I have a DLink 655 router with the latest firmware(updated today). I have read reports of other people with the issue I describe below in the Evansville thread with different routers, but thought I would start a new one in hopes someone may see this and be able to help. Maybe Wow Dan can help... I have the 30/3 speed.

Basically, to get any type of internet connection with the Arris modem/router, wireless needs to be disabled and I need to be plugged in. If I enable wireless, I get no connection even if plugged in directly. Am I doing something stupid/wrong? (All i do is check / uncheck the box for enabling wireless in the arris settings page.)

This wouldn't be much of an issue if I could make use of the bridge function and my dlink router, but whenever I set the arris to bridged, it basically doesn't work as the dlink router cannot get the WAN IP address.

If you have the arris working in bridged mode, can you please post screen shots of your arris router configuration screens or let me know if there is anything I need to change on the dlink? Is wireless supposed to work on the arris router? I'd rather use my dlink but can live with wireless via the arris.

May need to give tech support a call, but the tech who was here during install couldn't figure it out, and I wasn't sure if they supported 3rd party routers or if the 30/3 package wasn't supposed to have wireless networking or something crazy.

thanks for the help.

If you can provide me your cmac of your modem, I can take a look at it when I get back to the office. Not sure how much help I will be with the d-link, but I can give it a go.

PMed. think I have wireless working plugged directly into the arris, not sure what was going on, may have just been messing with too many settings at once.

would like to use dlink but if not at least wireless is working. will check more devices to make sure wireless is 100% working.

one of my friends changed over to this new arris modem and wanted bridged mode.

in the arris, he had to disable the firewall and hit apply. then he had to go to the lan settings page and turn off the dhcp server, change to bridged mode, then hit apply, then reboot the modem and router.

hopefully that gets you into bridged mode.

I gave this a try. My router will at least receive an IP address from the arris modem by doing what you said, but all of the pc's/devices connected to the dlink router have no internet connection, can't ping anything etc. I even used the router tools to try and ping some stuff directly from the router, no responses.

If I do the setup as you suggested and plug directly into my computer, my NIC will also get the external WOW ip(75.blah), but have no connection / unable to ping stuff. Any ideas?

attached pic of my dlink router with the IP address, anything look wrong in the pic? Basically this is from a fresh factory restore.

with the arris in bridged mode, can you get an IP address if you hook your PC directly to it?

I wanted to rule out the dlink router to make sure the cable modem is working properly in bridge mode.

yeah if I put it in bridged mode with the settings you described earlier , connected directly to my PC, my pc grabs an IP address just like the router does, but then acts like there is no connection, can't access any sites or anything, no pings, etc, but it does have an IP

from ipconfig:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : wowway.com
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::d4fa:83cb:9241:365c%11
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 75.118.71.132
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 75.118.64.1

Pretty weird you can get a ip address but not ping, transmit or receive any type of data. I wonder if your modem/router needs to be hard reset.

can't hard reset a direct connection to my computer though :/

Just because the modem/router is bridged doesn't mean it can't be hard reset to factory defaults. If there is no way to do it with a button external on the modem, someone from WOW can probably issue a command from their system. You really want WOW_Dan on this one. Hard reset it, bridge it again, and hopefully is will work like it is supposed to.

not quite sure I understand what you'd like me to try..

#1: set it into bridged mode, and then hard reset it? wouldn't this just overwrite everything I changed and put it into NAT mode?

#2: hard reset then re-set it to bridged mode?

i can confirm #2 does nothing

Try with your dlink router now, tell me if it works.

Dlink same as before, grabs an ip but does not connect to sites or pings. Also, now if I hook directly into the arras I can't get a connection.

Responding via my phone, should I hook directly back into the arris?

Is your D-Link 655 set to Bridge as well? Mine has to be....

Sirwriter, post a screen shot of what you think you are bridging that makes a difference or is related to this specific case. My guess is that it is unrelated.

I worked with WOWDan and going to be working with him again today I think to try and figure this stuff out

I also cannot get the bridged mode to work correctly on this device:

When I set it to bridged, I don't get a DHCP address assigned to my router's WAN, same as octobeast. I can connect in bridged mode by forcing my router's WAN to a static IP configuration. In that setup the DG950 suddenly can't get an external IP address assigned from WOW's DHCP servers, which doesn't make any sense at all to me. So Bridged mode, but no Internet. Or a double-NAT setup.

I did try the suggestions of disabling the DHCP server and firewall, but no luck.

I should also point out that WOW's network tech could not properly assign a static IP address to this device either, so I had to drop that from my account. I really wish they still provided regular old modems for DOCSIS 3.

OK, I finally did get bridged mode working.

I had to disable the firewall, disable DHCP, change to bridged, reboot the modem, change to bridged again (it wouldn't take the first time), reboot the modem again, then release the DHCP lease on the router and wait about 15 minutes. Now my router shows WOW's external IP address again instead of one in the 192.168 range. The one downside is that I can no longer access any of the modem's screens in this setup so I can't check things like signal levels without disconnecting my internet.
