Re: ARRIS DG950 - bridge / wireless??

Confidence is relative. You won't upgrade until you are confident I suspect; which may be a while based on your username.

Or until the provider can do it without the user needing to be an IT expert. Apparently I was unlcear on the level of knowledge that is necessary to get high speed internet.

I would guess that knowledge base of 99% of subscribers isn't represented by those who post here.

I was pointing out that what the posters have had to do to get things working properly wouldn't even be on the radar of most.

Many will pay the additional money to upgrade only to find things not working very well for them. And based on many posts even WOW won't be able to help.

Reading all this makes me wonder what about the non computer savvy person who just wants these faster speeds?

many non computer savvy people will be happy removing their router or whatever else is on in their house, including the ability to get rid of their own routers. with this in mind, you can see why they opted to deliver the cable modem in router/nat/wifi mode instead of bridged mode.

You're also an early adopter and should expect bumps until they get it all figured out. this doesn't preclude WOW from having a seamless roll-out but the issues experienced here haven't been big enough to stop the roll-out.

i'm sure wow_dan and his management have metrics about what types of internet issues customers call about most frequently and how to resolve them. i'm sure they also track what kind of impact these residential gateways have on customer satisfaction and customer service, and where support technicians spend their time.

80% of your complaints come from 20% of your customers?

The stuff people here (this thread and others) have had to do to their modems, routers and numerous other things just to get things working properly many people (including myself) wouldn't have a clue about.

It also seems like WOW install techs wouldn't be much help.

I guess I won't be upgrading until WOW is more confident in how to get things working properly for everyone.

I believe the people having issues have more advanced in-home nets like I do. I admit my network is far from normal. I mean how many have a Symmetricom GPS clock on their network? Got it on ebay and I like having a Statum 1 time source plus it outputs a high accuracy 10 MHz clock to configure my frequency counter with. I have a ham radio license which is why I have it.

For the non-network person, I think the new all-in-one MODEM is better for them.

yeah for most people, the normal router will be fine. as long as they get a connection + wireless they're happy, not like IT nerds such as myself. still working good, firmware ftw

I just had WOW upgrade my service to 30/3 and here are the following steps to get the Arris DG950 working in Bridged mode.
1. Your firmware must be at least: 7.10.131 (WOW has to send the updated firmware to your modem)
2. Login to the modem: »192.168.0.1
3. Under Basic Setup tab:
Disable Wireless
Click Apply
4. Under Firewall tab (optional):
Disable Firewall
Disable DoS Attack Protection Firewall
Disable Ping Blocking
Disable Block Fragmented IP Packets
Click Apply
5. Under LAN Settings tab:
Set NAT Mode to Bridged
Click Apply
Your router should get an External IP from WOW now. I had to change the firewall options (Step 4) to get my DMVPN to work on my Cisco 2851 router. The technician that came out spent almost 2 hours with me trying to get the Bridged mode working before we figured out these settings. The NOC states that you don't need to disable the Firewall settings however, the Arris blocks IPSEC VPN traffic (udp 500).

I hope this information will help anyone else trying to get Bridged mode working correctly.

Thanks to your info, I was able to put my DG950 in bridge mode and connect a DIR-655 to it. Working great with the 50/5 package. Note: QOS turned off on the DIR-655 to achieve max throughput!

I'm glad someone has the 50/5 working. Ever since they hooked my DG950 up my internet has been crap. Slow as hell and then some. I have my main computer hardlined to the modem. The modem is supposed to be letting my Airport Router do it's work. I tried to get into the Arris modem console but the admin password doesn't work. Who knows what they set it to. The guy who installed it didn't give me any information, because he said I'd never need it. Hahaha.

HELP

So should I reset the modem and start over??

I had the problem where I could get an IP address but no internet. I turned the WAN DHCP back on and it's working now.

My internet was just 'upgraded' by my isp (Not WOW) and i ended up with this device. Same problems bridging to my netgear. After a few hours of tinkering i now have it fully working. As mentioned a few times in this thread, i think the key was to disable the firewall on the DG950.

Just another confirmation that bridge mode does work on this modem.
Disable wifi. apply
disable firewall/dos attack/block pings/block frag. packets. apply
set nat to bridged. apply

Done.

I just got the modem today and had bridged mode working in 2 minutes. my wrt54gl has been assigned a wan address. I didn't disable dhcp, though you shouldn't need to if your in bridged, dhcp just won't be used automatically.

Which firewall, if any, are you using now?
