Re: [All] New England Weather

said by Dominokat:

Hmm. That (may) be true. But if it is, that would mean just about each and every tree on my property, and pretty much the whole coastal area I have traveled, is fungus infected.

Same with down here.

Re: Raking Leaves.
A day before these photos were taken, the yard looked OK.

Yeah. The big tree outside my window at work (40+ feet I'd guess) dropped all of its leaves in about 36 hours. Massive amounts of leaves on the ground.

I mulched up all the leaves on Saturday. Sharpen the mulching mower blade, drop the height down to like 2", then mow a bit slower then normal. The leaves disappear and the lawn gets happy next spring. I typically need to mulch mow the leaves 3 times a year at 1 1/2 hours a time so maybe 5 hours of work to kill almost 1/2 an acre of leaves.

Total Leaf Warfare Strategy has been implemented.

6 more bags to the Dump/Transfer Station/Mulch Pile/Whatever.

I still want a Fame-Thrower. A REAL one. If my neighbor shoots me and I blow up, it's OK. I understand. Total Leaf Warfare.

My back yard had some wonderful shade... unfortunately they were some of the nastiest pine trees I had ever seen. This spring I went all out and cut every single one of them down. No more pine needles all over the back yard. Bad news, no more song birds either. I have been thinking about planting some more trees, but I think I have changed my mind. I must admit though, leases are so much better than pine needles.

6 bags of leaves x 8 = 48. 2 days ago it was more dramatic.

Noon News: Snowing up north.

MOM: "You were the only one stupid enough to go skiing"
Me: "Something like that"

(years ago, my family had a "Cottage" in Vermont. I pissed away a few winters there when I should have been in University)

(Next, I'll tell you about the sailboats. It's an even better and longer story!)

I'm 39

It was a balmy 45 at my sister camp in Northern Maine. It has a metal roof, and the snow from the last storm (10 inches) was piled up on it. About mid morning, we heard a roar and sliding. We looked out the window to see a "waterfall" of snow just crashing down. It was cool!

You sure Walter Matthau wasn't out there with a garden hose spaying the roof just before this happened?

Weather says "Mostly sunny" today.
I haven't seen a moment of sunshine all day. It looks like it is going to rain instead.

I'm hoping for some real windy and snowy weather so that the branches that broke last time it snowed will come down. I've cut them up about 20' off the ground but they are up maybe 50-65' so no way I can reach them to completely remove them without some help.

My leaves, and there were many, are gone as are those of most of my neighbors. One neighbor hasn't done a thing yet. If we can avoid a SW wind I am golden.
Put up the outside wreaths and lighting and can't remember ever being as comfortable. This weather is a WINNER!!

I mowed the last of my leaves this week-end. After mulching leaves for a second year in a row I'll never go back to bagging them again. The lawn actually likes the mulched leaves in the spring for food as well. Cheaper, faster, and better for the lawn.

Hopefully the weather will be nice for a few more weeks so we can enjoy the leaf-free yard!

The first storm has already come October 29th. "Armageddon" I'll name it.
