HGST Acquisition Status Update:
In connection with its planned acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, the company is working to satisfy the remedy provision included in the European Commission's recent conditional approval of the transaction and to obtain approvals from the remaining regulatory authorities. Subject to completing these actions, the company is now expecting to close the transaction by March 2012.

lol here's how bad things are.. my friend who knows nothing really about hardware goes out and buys a external hard drive (WD of all picks) and it's a 1TB drive which I'm using right now he's like man this thing was expensive! I spent $120 on it

It seems like 1TB for $120 external is about the best price you are going to see? I really wanted a 2TB drive

Prices are coming down, not near where they were but at least going lower. Use sites like Techbargains to find decent deals, NewEgg has a 1TB external for $90 bucks with a coupon code.

Further reading, for those interested:

»hardware.slashdot.org/story/12/0···hs-later

However, I found many user comments quite useful/revealing. My favourite (and most useful, IMO) was from someone who lives in Thailand and is basically calling bullshit on the whole ordeal:

»hardware.slashdot.org/comments.p···38964487

There's a follow-up reply to this comment from someone arguing against it, but honestly it's the same head-in-the-sand BS I read during the many times where there were "DRAM shortages" as a result of catastrophes in Asian countries (and if I remember right, one of those turned out to result in a class-action lawsuit, which I believe Dell was in on as well). As such, I'm inclined to believe the bloke from Thailand.

'Most' buyers have moved to SSDs? Don't think so, they are still a bit too pricy and small for mainstream use even compared to elevated HD prices. The typical SSD buyer wants the speed but is still using one or more HDs to store data.

SSD's are WAY too small for my use. One for Windows, yes, but not much else.

That's why people buy them for an OS drive and use a large magnetic disk drive to store their files. That way you get the best of both worlds.

No I'm not saying they all did but I'm saying most said screw this and took the SSD over the hard drive knowing well that it's not the same size as a hdd.

I bet a year or two from now hard drive prices will hardly drop to pre flood prices

Very easy to make up statistics eh?

Can you show something showing the sale of SSD going up a hugeeee amount and the sale of hdd plummeting?

I would guess not, so ya do say everyone or most or whatever you made up went SSD when you can back it up

Prices are already falling depending on what drive you are looking at. The WD Black series drives are still outrageously priced, but there are drives out there maybe not quite as reliable that are a good deal. The blacks are approaching a price point I would consider buying them againj. I'm going to put in a price because these links a month from now will just show the current price.

Seagate 2TB 129.99 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···22148681 Pretty close to pre-flood pricing
WD Blue 750GB 109.99 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···22136768 down $40 but still wacko
WD Black 1TB $159.99 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···22136284 Still crazy, but down 50 bucks
Seagate 1TB 124.99 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···22148840 5 bucks more will buy you 2TB, no deal here, but the price will not make you cry

I don't know whether this is all bull, but I do know what goes up, has to come down.

Pre-flood I was paying $69 for 2TB WD Greens. Pricing still has a long way to fall.

Some good articles:

From what I read, Thailand is in danger of losing a lot of jobs, not due to the flooding, but due to a lack of leadership. A lot of equipment got destroyed and I don't think these companies are just going to rebuild (In Thailand) unless something is done to reassure the business community that the government is serious about preventing this from happening again.

Why would they build in a flood zone anyway? Maybe they thought it was just a one time thing?
