EnGenius EAP9550

I'm planning to replace my current wireless setup in a townhouse with one EnGenius EAP9550 and I'm wondering if anybody has experience with it.

My main question is what can one expect for vertical coverage if I mount it on 2nd floor ceiling in 2 story townhouse? Would it cover basement as well?

It has this antenna »www.airgain.com/pdfs/MaxBeam40N.pdf which I have zero experience with.

Disassembled unit here »www.keenansystems.com/Engenius_E···view.htm

...thanks

I dont have any experience with the EnGenius or that Antenna but just a few thoughts.
It seems to me that looking at the Elevation pattern that you would have to position that Antenna so that you get the gain from like 12 to 3'O'clock area since it seems to be directional looking at the blue. I guess the Green pattern is if you have it the other direction. This is going to be trial and error to get the positioning right since they don't give information on positioning ( I didn't see it) so that your bottom floor gets Wifi adequately.
I just suggest trying it out only if you know you can return it to store if it don't work out for you.

I am adding that this model seems to have positive reviews at Newegg.

It's a solid unit with very good range. The GUI is a bit different than most you are probably used to but it's packed with features you won't find elsewhere...and did I mention the range? You can buy these on Amazon probably cheaper than anywhere else and for the price you are getting a solid device.

The signal will cover your basement -- if your basement has lots of metal you're 'clients' will experience issues because of multipath -- in 'N' mode most of the smart antennas in place today do not know how to exploit multipath [like the EAP9550] --- but do work well when 'client' has matching technology and in most cases 'clients' tech very seldom matches.

I've been using EnGenius more and more, I really like them, and I often find better range than other mfg. at even twice the cost.

Hard to predict how it will be in your environment, you'll have to try it.

Brano,

I use one EAP-3660 in my two story home and love it! (I put dd-wrt on it)
Its not the same as your unit but I can vouch for Engenius. My unit can give me wireless all around my house, patio, front yard, and about 3 houses down the street. Its an awesome little device.

Interesting looking device, seems made for ceiling or sidewall mounts. Let us know how it performs!

I have one and it is fantastic! However, I will also mention their new EAP300 that has higher power and 5 dBi antenna instead of 4 dBi. Just released, could be promising.

Of course, two-way applications don't benefit from higher power, but one-way (downloads) do.

That is a high-power 802.11G device. The 80 mW RF output power EAP9550 will not reach 3 houses down the street. It should cover your house, and most of the yard, however. At least it does at my house.

Really, if you have one of these high-power access points like the EAP3660 (G), EAP150 (N) or EAP300(N) and are using it in a suburban setting common decency dictates you turn down the extremely high output power such that you cover your house and yard as desired, but don't walk all over the neighbors signal several houses away!!

Agreed. Is the power output adjustable on these devices?

If you use dd-wrt on it than yes you can tune it down.
I have tune it down in the past and still able to reach three houses down.

So you can use wifi at your neighbors three houses down? Excessively high power for a given size of coverage area accomplishes nothing except polluting the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band.

How would you like it if your neighbor got a high power AP, tuned it to the same channel as you and turned the power all the way up, just to cover his house and yard?

lol.... did your veins pop yet?
Like I said there is a reason why I got a 3660. None which are your business. The 3660 is accomplishing exactly what I wanted to do. I am going to leave it there.

Good luck in life.

One more question. Since my LAN is all gigabit and these smoke-like APs have only 100Mbps port I'm looking at this »www.engeniustech.com/index.php/b···-and-poe

What is the real life experience with achieving over 100Mbps speeds on N?
