[DIRECTV] HD upgrade install!

Finally got them to do an upgrade for free. I'm not paying to get leased equipment!

Now that I am HD, is there anything I need to know. All the TV's are HD.

I have the whole house DVR too.

Thanks in advance....

If you have a family, the DVR fills up fast. You will have to mediate some interesting disputes about "accidental deletions" and willful deletions of recorded shows by one family member to make room for new recordings. If you can save the money up to get each HDTV its own HD DVR, do so. Otherwise its a great system.

Well they screwed it up. I have an HD dish on the roof now and ONE HD DVR receiver, the other two receivers are still SD, they weren't on the order to upgrade, and the DVR is NOT whole house!

A friend had the same thing happen to him. The second installer spent 4 hours redoing the installation and cursed the first installer the whole time.

Your gonna have to pay the up-front fees for the other HD receivers.

This is a big reason why I don't like DirecTV. I can't stand paying for leased equipment up front and monthly.

The HDDVR can only stream one show to one HD receiver at a time.
Example in a 4 TV home it would be wise to have at least 2 HDDVR's
so the other 2 rooms can view content from either DVR not in streaming use.
You can add another Hard drive -up to 2TB in size connected external with a eSATA Cable. That will give you a lot more storage for recored content

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure you could do that or not...

BTW, when the wife called to tell them they forgot to upgrade the two other receivers to HD, they told her we should not have gotten a free upgrade and we owe them $300 for the install and HD DVR!

I may be canceling VERY soon.

OOPS! To cancel will cost $20 a month left on your two year commit -since your recent upgrade.

Take a deep breath it's only tv-Good luck with your choice.

Hate to say it but this is why people can preach DirecTV till they are blue in the face and I won't ever bite. Every time me or a family member have dealt with them we have gotten screwed one way or another. Not saying dish is perfect but never once in 15 years have they ever done me wrong.

I can completely relate. It's like they say whatever they can to get you to sign up and then afterwards they stick it to you. I can't stand any type of company that requires a contract. If you believe that much in your product, why require a commitment? I'd rather pay for the installation up front and have no commitment then get free installation and have a 2 year commitment to a service that I may or may not enjoy.

I couldn't agree more. This is the biggest thing keeping me from switching to DTV. I refuse to pay to a company when the equipment doesn't belong to me.

Re: [DIRECTV] HD upgrade install!

I've been with DTV for something like 8 years. They have always treated me right. It used to be that you'd buy the receiver and you own it. You still paid $6 a month to have that TV on the system, but if the receiver broke you'd have to buy a new one yourself. Now they have this lease model, but it looks the same to me. Still pay up front, still pay $6 a month, but if the receiver breaks they send you a new one for free. I've had several DVRs go bad and they have sent new ones for free.

I am in the same kind of situation as you. I need to upgrade the whole house to HD. I have 4 DVRs and a standard ancient RCA box. I called them yesterday and they said my upgrade would go like this:

Ancient RCA box would be upgraded for free since it is so old.
1 DVR I have is already HD compatible.
1 DVR would be given to me for free
2 DVRs would need to be purchased by me at a cost of $200 each.

The $200 x 2 DVRs kind of hurts. Maybe I could talk them into downgrading those 2 SD DVRs I currently have to standard HD boxes (not DVR) for free?

I'm considering a switch to Comcast. I have Comcast Phone and Internet and it's been great. Comcast has also treated me really good the last 2 years. I know, I'm surprised too! Comcast charges more per month for their DVR but there is no up front cost to get started. So this switch for me, to make my whole house HD and still have 4 DVR's would be free to do with Comcast. After the initial 24 months with Comcast I would be paying more than I'm paying with DTV right now though. Close, but still more.

So I'm still kind of on the fence on whether to stay with DTV or move to Comcast. My gut says stay with DTV. I have to consider the family's experience too. The family is going to kick my ass if I switch to Comcast and the guide or something else about the Comcast experience sux compared to DTV. At least with DTV I know what I'm getting.

Call Comcast and get a PRICE QUOTE for the same amount of equipment - I think you will be Shocked !!!! Read the fine print when they tell you $29 dollars for a year -then next year it goes to $299.

Good lick with your choice-price shop it first before you sigh
