Re: [SNOW] No power no internet

said by Subaru:

I've been hearing on the news about people running generators in houses.. WHY? What makes them do that?

Not just generators inside homes, people have been using charcoal grills INSIDE homes. I've heard at least two news stories on the local TV stations about people using charcoal grills inside and getting CO poisonings.

It happens every time we get long duration power outages. People run gennys and grills inside their homes. Its like clockwork that we get CO poisonings. Then there are the two or three house fires because people were using candles and they either tipped over or caught a curtain or other flammable thing on fire.

As of today, there are still some people without power in CT. The CL&P Facebook page tells a tale of woe. It's never been this bad in the half century or so that I've resided inside of CT.
When I lived in the Philippines, we had outages too, but power was always back on in a matter of hours. Something's seriously wrong with CT.

This might be insight into why:

I shudder to think what would happen when a cat 2 or 3 hurricane decides to pay the state a visit again. I never remember extensive power outages like this after storms in the past. Even with Hurricane Bob, we were out for less than a day. Yep, something is seriously wrong with this state, and like Harddrive & others have said, leaving it is sounding better & better.

OR just buy a generator less than 1000 dollars total and you've got all your necessities

Yup... generators are sweet. Just remember to buy enough gas when something major is expected...

Yeah, I've got a boat /jetski and 3 cars in the driveway (not all mine) so I figure I'm good for a few weeks at the least.

You can't siphon gas from most car tanks... they have an anti-siphon device.. just a FYI...

Was at Costco today and generators were flying off the shelves (figuratively speaking).. we say three of them being wheeled to checkout, one of which was a 12kw propane automatic model.

The problem with generators is that gasoline is likely to rise a lot in the next six months, and you can't really store enough to run for say, six months, which is about what you'd need for the coming economic collapse. Heaven forbid if Israel bombs Iran this summer, and the Chinese blockade the Persian Gulf--we'll be fooked. Think we got problems now? Try $39 /gallon for regular and rationing. It's coming, but the scary thing is I can't predict the exact month. Just watching the Euro go down in flames.. US$ will see a temporary boost for a while, but then we'll go down eventually with the deficit and unfunded pension collapse.. these storms are a tiny preview of life after TSHTF. Now extend that 1 week to 6 months and you've got a better idea of what to prepare for.

Practically speaking, diesel with the ability to burn cooking oil, bio diesel, etc., may be the only viable option when the gas stations are closed and no trucks are running. Diesel is 30% more efficient than gasoline engines, and a 1200rpm diesel genset is going to be quieter and last a LOT longer. You need reliability for extended run times lasting into the months.

Storms are going to get worse for a while too. Sunspot/solar storms are peaking this year. There was a major solar flare 3 days before the October snow storm. Alaska is in the midst of a 'snowicane' right now.

I'm glad folks are waking up, but storing all that fuel is dangerous and also a bad investment if you don't use proper additives to preserve it for long storage. Diesel has better shelf life and you can run it off a big huge underground storage tank for months at a time.

$39 a gallon!! I heard it was only going to get to $38.50 a gallon!!@

@snet.net

How many of you, back in the 1950s, paying 15 cents a gallon for gas ever thought we'd see $4.00 a gallon? If I said gas was going over $3 back in 1958, folks would have laughed at me. But the curve is accelerating. We won't need another fifty years to get there. War breaks out, blockades happen, and guess what happens to fuel prices and fuel supplies?

Given all the hand-wringing in the last 5 decades about how we're going to run out of oil (and still haven't) and given all the public monies spent trying to find alternatives, I'm actually shocked we can still buy it at $3+ (which is only double the 1950 price, when adjusted for inflation). So, yes, any reasonable person should have seen this.

If I'd told you in 1850 that within 50 years we'd completely drop whale oil as a source of heat and light, and instead use a petroleum substance that we drill and suck up from underground, you'd have laughed at me...

And what's going to happen when, inevitably, oil/fuel supplies drop and prices rise? We adapt. The market price shift will signal to us to buy more fuel-efficient transportation (which it has; the market for SUVs has tanked and the market for smaller cars is rising significantly) and we find alternatives such as natural gas.

If I'd told you in 1950 that one of Chevrolet's most sought-after cars in 2011 would be a compact plug-in electric hybrid, you'd have laughed at me...

We sense, we adapt. And we survive just fine, thank-you-very-much... - GA

Power was out for about 4 hours. CL&P's website indicated 4% of Danbury was out at the time of our blackout. It's amazing.

I was out for 8 hours last sunday. It was awesome...... went out to mow the lawn right after putting my pot roast on......came back in to nothing. CL&P's website said EIGHT people in my town were affected. Power didn't come back till 930 or 10 ish.......they replaced one of those cylinder things on the pole outside my house. Needless to say, my generator sure has gotten a workout since I bought it.

Don't forget to change the oil on your generators, folks. Also, every couple hundred hours, check the field brushes. If they wear out, you'll get no juice, even though the engine is running.

This is serious stuff.. not necessarily and outbreak of disease, but think about what's happening in EU right now. That's coming here, after a brief bounce in the Dollar as EU money flees to 'safer' havens for a brief period.

I know I'm casting pearl before swine to 90% of readers here, but the 10% who 'get it' will be more likely to be prepared.
