 | [DSL-2740B] - Random Wifi Disconnect Hi,
I've had my D-Link 2740B for about 3 years now, and it has worked great up until now. About 2 days ago, however, I started encountering a strange problem. I booted up my laptop and tried to get it to connect to my wifi - it has never had a problem before. This time, however, it didn't connect. When I tried to connect manually it asked me for a username and password, which I found strange since it usually just asks for the Key. I decided to see if it was just a problem with the laptop, so I took my iPhone 3Gs and tried to connect. Same thing: Usually it will just ask for a password and then connect, but this time it was asking for a username and password. I decided to just reboot the router and see if that fixed it - which it did. I was able to connect perfectly, nothing strange. Unfortunately this only lasted for about 15 minutes, or when I let my phone/laptop idle. After that, it does the same thing again. I rebooted the router again, and it fixed it again. The next time it happened I changed a setting on the router and saved it - that fixed it, but then it failed again. Next I tried not changing any settings, but simply hitting save in an option menu on the router - that fixed it. Again, only temporarily. So I decided I should try upgrading the firmware, which I did - to the following:
Board ID: 96358GW Software Version: AUS_4.15 Bootloader (CFE) Version: 1.0.37-10.1 Wireless Driver Version: 4.174.64.12.cpe1.1
Again, that only fixed it temporarily. I feel I am running out of options here. The only things I can think of right now are trying to reset to factory defaults and seeing if that helps, but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The only thing that I changed was getting a new phone, and it worked normally for 2 weeks, so I doubt that is the problem. Also I tried kicking the router and bribing it with candy.
It is a D-Link DSL-2740B, I am running Windows XP SP2. As I said before, there have been no changes at or around the time this started happening. I've installed no new software or hardware.
Thanks for any help

Resetting to factory defaults and reconfiguring worked.
However, if anyone has any suggestions as to why it happened in the first place I would be interested to know!
b1177 | | | reply to b1177 Could be a sign that it's going bad, 3 years for a SOHO device like Dlink - in my opinion, you should consider yourself lucky it's lasted that long.
Make sure it's not located where it's getting too hot (like ontop of a TV or a cable box, or a toaster, near a heat duct, space heater, etc) excessive heat makes electronics unhappy. | | |
