In a house I'm not currently living in, where I only watered the landscape for half the month and there's no other water usage, our bill from IRWD last month was $28. This was for 1 ccf (100 cubic feet) of water.

we're not paying for the water where we currently live.

how many ccf are you using?

WMWD - Usually about $100-$120/month (family of 7) during the warm months and about 25% less during the wet months when I shut the sprinklers off and not having to add as much water to the pool...

$73 for 2 months in summer.

You pay more to suck all the water from the Owens valley or the Delta up here hundreds of miles away. Built concrete rivers (full of dead bodies and stolen cars) and pumps to ship it over mountains to the local swimming pool.

Nothing yet. I'm still paying a flat rate until next year when the metered billing starts. These people already installed the water meter and started the baseline by metering first. The actuall metering will take place next year .

Here with three apartments occupied the entire building peaked at a daily average of 1,300 gal. back in February. This includes irrigation. I haven't seen the bills but was told it was $300-$350 but DWP bills for two months at a time, and I don't know if that figure included the sewer charge, trash pickup charge, or taxes (LA adds a 10% tax on utilities.)

There are several broken sprinklers here and water was just gushing out and running into the gutter nightly. They turned off all the sprinklers in June and the daily average went down to 270 gal. or less.

I've been told by a water company employee that homeowners are usually unaware when there is a leak at the water meter, or in the water line from the meter to the house and it adds up.
Do you over-water, have broken sprinklers, unknown leaks?

I talked to a customer in RSM..their bill doubled..it went from $150.00 to over $300 this past month...they though the pool, which has an auto fill, maybe leaking...I guess everyone's water bill has gone up recently?

Where I live in MV the association dues pay the water bill...so far no increases.

When my brother put in new grass (and new sprinkler system) this past summer, it was watered everyday for about two weeks (or three). Since I'm still on a flat rate (yay), it doesn't affect me. But as I said before, the metering will be started on June 2012 and no more flat rate .

My best friend bought a condo a couple of years ago and in his it has a water meter. I don't think it was turned on but rest assured they will. So if your condo does not have a water meter, by law, they will have one installed (eventually).

The law of diminishing income...
As more and more associations look for ways to cut costs in lieu of pissing off homeowners with higher dues, they have started installing water meters on the individual units. Happened to me at our vacation townhome and now I'm responsible for all personal water usage. Probably cheaper than a monthly increase to cover higher water costs.

Did your monthly dues get lowered? How much was the assessment to have the meters installed? How big is your complex?

When searching for info on water regulations a few months ago, I came across some info indicating that water is not metered in certain parts of CA. I thought, imagine that, in this day and age, no meter and customers just pay a relatively small flat rate. The same info indicated that new (state or fed, can't remember) water conservation legislation required all water delivery to be metered by 2012, to encourage water conservation.

That's correct, see above about that water conservation legislation. However that only requires that water delivery be metered, so only the water company's meter(s) to the premises are affected.

But the cost of wireless remote metering systems is within the reach of even mid-size apartment buildings. The complex where my dad lives has eight buildings of eight apartments each. The entire complex is all seniors and all fixed income, and there's some rent control reg that prevents the owners from charging for water in addition to rent. Despite this, a few years ago they installed remote water metering on every fixture in every apartment. Tenants were told if they went over a "reasonable" usage they would be billed for the excess. So knowing they wouldn't be able to recover the cost of the metering system, the owners spent the money to install it.

Edit: to clarify.

Our condo complex, of 199 units, has two or three master meters.

Good point, I was thinking of single family homes but it applies to all water companies and all customers. (edited to clarify)

Since 1992, State law has required water meter installation as part of all new construction. In 2004, the Legislature passed AB 2572, requiring all water suppliers to install water meters on all customer connections by January 1, 2025.

I have lived in several different apartment complex and now will only rent from ones that include water, sewer, and trash with the rent. At two different apts that bill it, one charged a flat rate every month and was billed from the property management company, another complex used a nation wide utility billing company, and the bill dramatically increased and decreased every month. Sometimes the bill was $80 for water, then $32 the next month as basically I was told by the biller that the entire building (20units) had ONE meter , and the bill was divided up and then they factored in how many people were on the lease also. Not fair! I say you should only be able to be billed for it if it is the meter for YOUR unit. Also was bad if someone thru a sofa in the trash dumpster and they had to have extra pick ups the trash portion of the bill was higher too.
