Joining a WISP

We currently have some pretty poor DSL service from Fairpoint 1.5/384. I just happened to stumble upon a WISP in our area who will cover us for
3Mbps/1Mbps - $49.95/mth - Installation max $99
7Mbps/2Mbps - $59.95/mth - Installation max $99.

What should I know or ask before joining a WISP. Are there any major disadvantages of disconnects or low caps ? I know each company is very different I would just love some feedback as this is completely new territory for me. Thank you !

Re: Joing a WISP

Those look like very good prices for the plans offered. I'm surprised the install is so low. Ask your neighbors who have it what their experience is. Ask the WISP what technology/gear/frequency they use. Where is the location?

The WISP world can be VERY autonomous. What goes for one may not go for the other. Jim's suggestion is a good one. See if you can find some existing customers and ask them about their experience. Does the company's website show user reviews or testimonials?

Good luck in your search! Fixed Wireless Broadband has come a long way IMHO. The technology can work very well with the right engineering.

The company is located in southwestern NH. It covers 550 square mileage across the state including my town. I gave him my gps coordinated and he said it looks like a go. I've got to call him back to get the site survey and installation set up for Monday.
According to 'bird flight' we are 2.39 miles from the WISP tower. The only issue I can think of is we have some trees in our backyard but it appears they have some great success covering large portions of towns and end areas. So hopefully they have some lower spectrum for leaf penetration or a 2.5ghz high powered (preferably).

I'm not sure of anyone in town that uses it. We are all covered by Fairpoint DSL limited to 1.5/384k which can be quite flakey. I think most have just stuck with DSL though my tech savvy neighbor may have joined. I just stumbled upon the company and user ratings gave them a 4 out of 5 stars total.

What should expect come time for the site survey and is there any additional information I can provide to be helpful or particular questions to ask ? I'm in hyper focus mode learning everything there is to know about Wimaxx.

One last thing is there any relation to cellular strength that is potentially broadcast from the same area with CDMA technology. I went around our property searching out the best spot for a lower dbm. On the lower roof was actually the best so I would imagine the peak of the house should do quite well.

The best part is they have no caps !

It's fine to post the name of the company here. Without it, others won't be able to give much helpful information.

Best thing is to just let them do their job. Sure, ask any specific questions you have, but the more flexible you can be (location of antenna, wire, etc) the easier it will be for them to do the install, and the better service you will typically end up with.

Nope. It might be somewhat related if they have equipment on the same tower, but most WISP's don't locate on cell towers. Plus the frequencies can be drastically different, so that will affect signal strengths too.

The company name is Wivalley.com »sites.google.com/a/wi-v.net/home/home

I sent the guy updated gps coordinates a whole bunch of stuff. I will remain absolutely as flexible as they need for I really really want this and wireless/wimax fascinates me. I'm learning like crazy.

Also I found one review which was raving and there were 5 votes »www.wispdirectory.com/index.php?···Itemid=0

I think I'm just overly excited at the prospect.

Re: Joining a WISP

I have friends in Southern NH. Two of my family friends have the service and are happy with it. I tried to get them to do an install for my parents, but they didn't have coverage in the area they live in.

If I am not mistaken, they use Motorola Canopy. For the area, I would assume that it's 900Mhz simply due to my friend's location and where she told me the AP is located. She has been nothing short of extremely pleased with her service since it was installed.

As the other posters have stated, be as flexible as possible and trust that installers know what they are doing. I haven't heard anything bad about WiValley. It sounds positive!!

So he said they use 2.4ghz but it seems like they are really up on the technology. He said it's about a 50/50 chance of being able to grab the signal but he still asked if i wanted 3/1 or 7/2 so if it works it must still work well. I'm so hoping it does work ! Tech is coming out Monday at 8:30 am. I'm excited for his arrival.

Also thanks SBBVince if you don't mind me asking do you know where they are located (your family friends from NH). Thanks !

One lives in Harrisonville and I am not sure where exactly the other guy lives. When I was home last he was telling me about it and that he it at his house.

If it's 2.4Ghz using Motorola Canopy even better!!

Yes I believe that is correct Moto Canopy. How does it preform when you have a fair amount of trees between u and the signal ?

It really depends on the area. The amount of objects (trees in this case) in between you and the access point make a big difference. It's honestly hard to say. Evergreen trees can cause some trouble. On the flip side it could work outstandingly well. I have installed customers that get a good signal through a moderate amount of trees and then tried to install a customer with minimal tree coverage. Noise floor is also taken in to account. This goes for both the AP side and the customer side. I wish I could give a more finite answer, but without actually knowing the area it's almost impossible to tell for sure.

Let us know how it goes on Monday!

Will do ! Thanks for your responses. If we are able to get a 7/2 connection it will be a game changer considering we dropped Directv and now are going to be relying on a "modified" Apple TV 2. With our current connection 1.5/384k everything comes as SD.

Also is there any significant possible scenarios for a signal dropping ? Is that known to happen every so often or is it a pretty stable connection ? Thanks again.

sure, a power outage will knock the AP off-line. I've had that happen only once and it was quickly restored. It is a very stable connection.

Also keep in mind you live in an area where snow and ice play a large factor into early spring, as witnessed by the 2ft that was dumped on you last weekend. But, as stated before, you won't really be able to know for 100% until it's installed. The installer's previous experience will be able to give them an idea of how it's going to work, but there is no way to give a definite answer.

Warning about using streaming internet for your tv-
most fixed wireless isp's frown upon this because it severely limits their capability to serve their customers. One customer watching HD video constantly will cause service to drop for others on the same transmitter.

You should ask them about this first and let them know what you plan to do.

Many will throttle your streaming speed if you begin to cause issues for others.
