what do you mean?

Yesterday Amazon stopped fighting the states on sales tax, and instead, offered itself up to enforce them, for a fee.

Look at it from Amazon's point of view though. They were losing independent sellers by leaving states that wanted to tax them Eventually they would have had to move some warehouses offshore.

Sales taxes don't bother me. I end up paying them on my state income tax form anyway (thanks to my too honest wife). I will still use Amazon because of pricing and selection that b&m stores find hard to match.

Any news articles on this? First I'm hearing.

I'll just go with independent sellers on ebay. I rarely shop on Amazon anyway especially for used items because I have no idea what I'm going to get.

I predict Amazon is going to become the next AOL and Overstock in a few years. The only thing keeping them alive at this point is their hosting services.

Sales taxes don't bother me at all. Its new and/or increased taxes which bother me.

Our city, county and state are constantly inventing new taxes, although they try to call them something else. Just this month alone, the city, county, and state cost me nearly $1,000 in NEW regulatory compliance and fees that they just pull out of their rear. That's $1,000 not invested in our business, not paid to contractors, not circulating in the economy. And that type of nonsense shows up every month, without fail.

This is only for third party vendors.

quote:
In an abrupt about-face, the company is now offering to handle sales-tax chores for merchants who sell products through its site for a fee equivalent to 2.9% of the taxes collected.

The optional service, which is set to roll out Feb. 1, will be offered to Amazon's third-party vendors in all 50 states. It's a strategy that could reap millions of dollars in new revenue for Amazon, which has been among the most vocal opponents of government attempts to tax e-commerce.

You can spin it any way you want. That doesn't change the fact that Amazon has thrown in the towel, and chosen to bed down with government thieves, rather than defend their customers.
