QAM local HD channels

My local HD channels keep changing. Like, sometimes I need to tune just 200 to get ABC HD. Then after some weeks of stability, it no longer works and I have to key xx-200. This changed often during transition. After Early Sept, I had to use the xx-zzz format to access hd locals. I just programmed them into a new Samsung TV as favorite. Then here in early Nov, the xx-zzz channels were gone again. I looked around, and they were back on 200,201 , etc., which I prefer. But I hate the instability. Anyone know what is going on. As near as I can tell, no one messes with the TV channel manager.

If you didn't post the type of tv I would have asked if it was a Samsung. I have seen this happen only to Samsungs, all newer models also. I have seen channel 13, 50, 51 and a few others where you are not able to tune to them directly.

When this happens I usually just keep hitting the channel up button and usually I will see it go through the xx-zzz channels but for instance it will go to channel 64 then 64.13 and then the tv jumps to 13. At that point I can tune directly to the channel but cannot tune back to 64.13, weird huh?

As weird as it sounds it is happening and as far as I can see its only Samsungs that have this issue so I dont really think it's a WOW! issue.

So, it seems it is not just me or my TV

I have 2 Sony TVs and the local QAM HD channels are and have always been 200-208 for me. Even before the conversion they were 200-208. I have some issues with other channels changing sometimes but not these.

My issue is my older Sony will have some oddball channels like 118.28357 just show up that were not there right after a rescan. These do not decode. I hide them and a few days later a few more will show up.

I went a couple of months with being able to key 200-208 directly into TV. Now, once again, I have to type xx-xxx to get them.
Dan! Can you tell us what changes? (see first post for more details)

On my sony this also happens. Forever it was 200-208, it has just been recently that they have been switching between the 2.

There's changes being made in Illinois right now. Currently Illnois customers have to tune most channels by the MPEG channel - WOW channel. This is the only market that should be experiencing that at this time. If you channel map shows up correct, I recommend not rescanning unless there's a problem with a channel.

Not clear on what you are telling us. Do you mean we will get back the simplified 200-208 key-in for locals? I had already scanned them hoping I would get back the simplified Keying.

What should we do now? Sit tight? Rescan later, or what?

I am wondering why WOW maps the HD local channels to the 200s and the subchannels to the 100s. My experience with other cable providers has been the channels are just mapped to their digital channel numbers as they would be using an antenna. This makes a lot more sense to me than needing to remember other numbers.

My guess is that they did not really think it all the way through to include future expansion, and would rather not complete reorganize all the channels, which would confuse customers more.

I do notice some organization in the regular channel layout (somewhat). I just wish that in the cable box, you could tune to the SD channel # and have it display in HD if you are using a HDTV. It would be so much more convenient to just replace the SD channels with HD. Of course, this would increase bandwidth, so maybe have the box access the HD channel if it is configured for HD use (HDTV setup wizard or HDMI or a setting in the menu), and if it is an HDTV, pull the HD stream instead. This would be so much easier than having to check if it's in HD and then find the # and tune to it.

IIRC, i-Guide shows in the flip bar when you tune to a channel "Would you like to watch this in HD?". Something like that would be nice in the new DVR.

The Moxi Menu has an HDTV category card, so this would perhaps be similar.

Unless you're in Illinois, you should have channels mapped to the standard WOW channel numbers. This isn't a guarantee though, as we can't possibly make sure every QAM tuner on the market acts the same way. Tuners in the more basic televisions tend to not display the channels the same as higher end tuners.

In Illinois, there are two different channel maps, which creates a conflict, and doesn't allow for tuners to map channels the same way. We're exploring possible solutions to that, but at this time most, if not all clear QAM stations will come in with the MPEG channel number before the WOW channel number.
