Text message spam

Somehow I got on some sports betting site that used to call with telemarket me for gambling tips. Recently received text message spam with the text,

"go 3-0 for FREE including my BEST BET. reply WIN SAT or call 8009822211. I lose 1 play and you get 1 month of service FREE. 2end msgs reply STOP"

If they send spam, its a scam. Hopefully the FTC can shut these jerks down.

I was afraid to reply with STOP because it would validate my phone number, but I did and received the text

"You will no longer receive msgs from FamilyFirstAlerts. For more info please visit »familyfirstalerts.com/ffa.html or text HELP. Msg&data rates may apply"

Shame on familyfirstalerts.com for facilitating text message spam. If I was a parent I would think twice before providing my child's phone number to this website or any other business that facilitates unscrupulous activities.

I bork the twits by calling their toll-free number from my Localphone IP number. The outgoing Caller ID they use can't be reached by inbound. While it doesn't stop them, it does mess them up because their spam-o-matic gets an unusable number and their phone number capture is also unusable...and your actual number can't be validated.

Depending on your wireless carrier, they might credit you for the message as well as making use of the info to try blocking the twits...the key is calling your wireless company as soon as possible after the message so they can see it in their stream. Some carriers also give you online tools for blocking SMS that originates from the Internet (however that may not be an option if you receive legit SMS notifications such as from your bank or other company you do business with).
