| Am traffic message question You know those signs that say turn to whatever station to hear a message alert..
Anyways this one station (not sure of the location) You pretty much have to get right up on it and by that time it's almost distorting.
It brings me to these questions..
It must be pretty low powered since after seeing the sign you have to drive about a mile until it starts to slowly fade in to hear it..
And the areas where it's at it must be located on a building?
I just know it's 1630 AM
I'm sure the FCC has some info on it but i'm sure it's hard to find? Do they do callsigns for these small stations? -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

| Yes, they are low powered and they do have callsigns.

WPML750
And the location
I95 NORTHBOUND EXIT 9 STAMFORD, CT FAIRFIELD County
41-03-25.3 N, 073-30-45.4 W
Only 15m high with an elevation of 24m
Hmm I don't see anything at that location.. However I think it's closer to the highway.. I wonder if it's mounted on this pole with a weather ammeter on it.

Yeah that's gotta be it.. most of the other transmitters are about the same size but this one just has extra gear on it and it has the same box.

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | they have pretty strict height rules.. all of them are 10 watts.
Matter of fact driving on the highway you can get as close as 50 Ft from the transmitter. |

| reply to Subaru shit i thought I put the FCC link up (new page looks nice but un-useable) anyways.. I think the total height is like 50 Ft or about that.

yep 15 M for the height... Funny I could not find anything about the weather equipment that's with it.. not that I expect to but it has some type of yagi antenna on the pole as well. |

the other one that looks like it must be some type of weather setup but I know of nothing as far as road signs or traffic that says anything about weather. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

yep 15 M for the height... Funny I could not find anything about the weather equipment that's with it.. not that I expect to but it has some type of yagi antenna on the pole as well. And again... not all antennas are vertical, and a beam for 1.63 Mhz would be huge also.
A quarter wave for that frequency would probably be somewhere around 150' long.
I'm nowhere near an expert on antennas that are that low frequency, but I dont think there is such thing as a "Compact" antenna that would load properly.
That doesn't mean that the antenna is tuned properly. Since limited range is the goal, getting a good match may not be as important... Really, if you had a way to reject the reflected signal, you could load it into whatever you wanted. I've seen people load up all kinds of weird things. -- I'm tired of killing stupid people just trying to do my job and go home! |

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | I can say it's nowhere near 150' tall that's for sure.. it's funny because driving on the other side of the highway Say I'm like 1,000 fT from the transmitter (guessing) I'd still hit a dead spot but it must be from the overpass I'm going under? |

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | I passed it today in daylight looks pretty much like the picture but has the square box.
The signal picks up better going south on 95.. going North you need to drive about another 2 miles before you start to hear voice and not static. |

| reply to Subaru You can make a loaded coil antenna that would work for short range. There are several antenna projects out there that make a 160M antenna for ham radio by winding wire around PVC.
10W and that antenna you get short range.
here is one

DrStrangeTechnically feasiblePremium join:2001-07-23 West Hartford, CT kudos:1 | reply to burner50 You could make a 'compact' antenna for 1.63MHz, but the bandwidth would be very narrow. Then again, these stations only transmit on one frequency.
Jetstream has a loaded whip [J-JTMHF160] for 160m. It's 8 feet long, has a usable bandwidth of 12KHz and handles 300 Watts. 1.63MHz is about 180m, so just extrapolate. |

| reply to Subaru As you found TIS stations are licensed under part 90, not part 73. They have been known to use all sorts of things for antenna's. Usually loaded (heavily), and range is not far, and it's not supposed to be. For roadway stuff they are usually installed by the Highway people and are typically use a sign post type installation. |

Most of them are mounted on the back of the signpost that advertises its usage. If I can remember, I'll snap a photo of one near Pensacola next time my route takes me that way. -- Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say. |
