Re: Am traffic message question

No. They're used and set up at the larger construction sites along the highway. They also have trailers that have cameras with various wireless gear to feed video back to a central location. All of them are solar powered, and self contained.

I've got a couple photos of one of the transmitters (not the trailers) that I snapped in Theodore, AL. Still trying to figure out where they were saved to on the phone. Will upload in a few...

overview. 25 foot telephone pole with transmitter and antenna
Click for full size
transmitter itself is inside the aluminum enclosure
This particular installation has the big blue sign, along with the flashing yellow light to alert drivers of a message. The transmitter and antenna installation is a little further off the roadway, mounted onto a 25 foot power pole. The transmitter itself is housed in a 10x14x8 aluminum enclosure, 90* offset from the power meter. This particular enclosure has a different style lock than the ones I have keys for, or else I would've popped the lid open for you. The antenna is visible best in the first photo, which is simply the white pvc part at the top of the pole. It is mounted to a piece of what looks like galvanized pipe, to push it over the top of the pole. The antenna is approx 14" in length. Effective range of this particular setup is about a 1500' radius... at least with my cheap-o head unit.

Then too, you can see my big truck. I will keep this thread in mind, and if I run across any portable units, I will be sure to get some pics of those for you too.

hmm interesting setup I wonder if they used a lesser height because they did measurements around the area?

For here they put the blue highway sign like almost 2 miles away from the transmitter so someone that turns to the station wont hear anything yet.

I highly doubt it was due to measurements around the area. Just because a particular installation requires a license, doesnt mean that any real thought was put into any other aspect of it. Its the gubberment, remember?

For whatever reason, the rest of the thread isnt appearing as it should in the box above my reply textbox....not sure if its been posted yet: »www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/lowpwr.html#TRAVELLERS

As for the sign being so far away from the transmitter, I am sure there is more than one unit. As you can see from my photos, they require almost no space at all. Searching the ULS, I cannot find any licenses for the location in my photos. I would have to assume these are running under Part 15 instead of Part 90. *shrugs*

nope no 2nd unit at all my guess is that's the only place they could mount the sign as the rest of the way is all elevated roadway until you get to the area where the transmitter is.

On the southbound side it's not that big of a gap and you can just make out the signal when you are at the sign.

It took me awhile to find the license info for my area as well.

There are licenses showing for several transmitter locations nearby, but not any for this particular installation. Unless its improperly recorded, which is also a possibility. There are many more transmitters in the area than the 6 that are recorded in the ULS. *shrugs*

I can't find anything on the new FCC site.. while it does look better I had to revert to the old look to find stuff.

Those stations are supposed to be covered by Part 90.

Did you search here?
