Primetime slowdowns do exist....but, if your dish is not peaked, it will be worse in prime-time.

Mine was re-peaked several months ago, and it made a difference...when off-peaked, your signal is "lost" in the "signal crowd."

Do kept in mind your mileage may vary...here's what your fellow Hughes user said:

So long and good luck!

Well, the DSL fairy finally got out to where I live and I'm hooked up to the REAL internet. No more HughesNet and their "up to 1.6 Mb/sec", which was really about 400 kb/sec during the peak times when I used it most. Thanks for all the technical and moral support over the past two years. Hang in there. I hope you all get DSL soon.

Those posts are getting fewer and fewer though. mostly you only see them with the old KU systems which are slowly being shut down and as such people are being crowded onto fewer and fewer satellites. They have the option to upgrade so they can get out of that situation any time they want. this is the norm for most of the HN customers now:

When your Testmy scores are examined, they do not show when these tests were performed, and they do show your download speeds have hoovered around 1 mbps, with uploads hoovering around a constant 270 mbps or so.

Also, kept in mind that Hughes is fully aware of sales impact when ViaSat-1 goes live. Hughes newest bird may not be loaded on all beams, so, your mileage may vary.

Once ViaSat-1 is operational, existing WB customers who can't switch over to ViaSat-1 may see an improvement.

Traditionally, Hughes has cost more...and most folks can get by just fine with 500kbps download, since many web sites meter out bandwidth. I've experienced on "fast" cable, slow speeds, due to primetime.

I dunno where you come up with all the jibberish. It says right there on the test that it was takin thursday the 10th and what time and I havn't been under 2 MB on hughesnet except during heavy weather in over 2 years, The only tests on testmy under 2 Mb/s are the Verizon tests from my phone which regularly tests below 1 Mb/s. They look something like this:

And here is you a brand spanking shiney new test on HN as of right now and I will be back at 8pm to give you a prime time score and then after that you can enjoy your varying milage all you want because I realise the is the WB forum and I am not gonna keep posting HN scores over here and annoying everyone else.

I went to Testmy, and reviewed your previous tests...your login name there was used to find these tests, where they show graphs of your previous tests...but these graphs do not show at what time the test was taken.

Very odd - when I look for Zeddlar's tests on testmy I not only see the graph (which shows almost NO tests in the past month down where you say they do) but also below it I see each individual test with date and time, along with the provider that the tests arrived from (Direcway).

You also apparently think that Hughes has the same beam issues that WB does. They do not, as all of their beam-loading is dynamic. Switched beams operate quite a bit differently than bent-pipes. Hopefully you will get to experience that improvement with Viasat 1.

It is also EXTREMELY unusual for any large website these days to throttle below many mbps.

I was looking at his Graphs, but the table does show a limited upload speed, and downloads speed do run higher overall.

Since he is out of OK., I will not buy the argument that location is not relevant. I will buy the argument that Huges is dressing up their operation, due to ViaSat-1 coming on-line next year. Changes in FAP policy, and maxing out bandwidth for customers are due to ViaSat-1's coming, not "good will" from Hughes.

Have you ever been to Youtube during primetime? I've experienced slow downs on "fast cable".

Just doing a quick Google search returned this tidbit:

At this time of writing, this little blog is throttled about 30 minutes daily. According to reader Troy of alterego-of-pwi.info, my blog took up to 45 seconds to load (it normally takes less than 3 seconds in normal time)!

I know that throttling is happening...even Gmail is not that much faster on "fast cable." Yes, some sites may give it out as fast as you can take it, but I think this represents a minority.

Having a 100 mbps FIOS is irrelevant when a site throttles.

For most users, 500kbps works just fine on most sites....yes, downloading a file works better with faster speeds...but most users are browsing.

PS: Any citation?

Footnote -

Does ASPnix throttle or limit websites in anyway?

Please review the following article »billing.aspnix.com/knowledgebase···nes.html

As long as your website does not violate any rules or limits you will not have any issues. However if your website(s) do violate any rules, for instance, using more than the allowed CPU resources for a period of time, your account may become suspended.

I certainly agree with the second part of that, although it is hard to tell how much is due to the change in ownership at Hughes. The first part is just not true - the dynamic nature of Hughes beams means that they've never had to close a beam, and are able to offer similar experiences on a national basis.

even Gmail is not that much faster on "fast cable."

Are there sites that throttle? Sure. Is it common on large sites? No. It is interesting that you mentioned gmail. You would be hard-pressed to find a site that shows a larger discrepancy between terrestrial and satellite! A factor or 15 to 20 times faster on terrestrial! Unfortunately it is not something that mere speed can take care of; the problem is that gmail is SSL, which is impossible to make into a good experience in a high-latency environment. All of Google is slowly becoming pure SSL. Even plain searches are SSL now if you are logged in, and the option to use http has gone away.

You can, as you did by searching for them, find sites that throttle. You won't find them among the top-tier. Google certainly doesn't throttle - they use mechanisms like captcha to stop unreasonable request volumes that come from bots.

Well then, Hughes should update their plans to reflect this new reality!

Upto speeds use to be a dream to achieve during prime-time, but now at Hughes, at least for one user, one gets speeds that business folks pay $350.00/month for at a reduce cost of around $100.00/month now.

Talk about dressing up the witch
