Credibility

Let's see, who should we believe, a study that attempts to make big corporations look like tax dodgers, or Verizon itself? Yea I'll go with the latter.

Though I will to correct one part of Verizon's response:

quote:
Verizon's customers paid out $1.79 billion in taxes over 2008-2010 ...

"attempts to make big corporations look like tax dodgers"

Uh...that actually requires effort?

Well to be fair, why is it bad for any private entity, be it a corporation or a person to exploit any and every legal method available to reduce tax burden? The people who write up these studies probably all do the same thing too.

I agree that the current US Federal Tax Code is a joke and should be revamped so that the tax burden is spread out more, but don't blame players for playing a game they have to play.

I want to know when are the Feds going to clamp down on all those tax dodgers that elect to itemize their deductions instead of taking the standard deduction. It's criminal how much they are stealing from the taxpayers.

I agree, everyone both big business, small business, millionaires, middle class, poor takes every tax break they can, it's foolish not to.

I don't blame Verizon for using those loopholes, but I do blame the tax code and regulations that allow these obviously bad deals to go through leaving areas with a bankrupt phone company that can't improve infrastructure and unfair tax code which allows the rich to get away with paying less taxes than the middle or poor class.

Corporate taxes I'm a little Leary on, we do need to compete with other nations that have low taxes on corporations or else we will lose businesses and with the unemployment we have we don't want to risk that. But the CEO's and executives shouldn't be paying less than I am on their income.

They don't have to play, but honestly the tax issue has been a problem since they started taking out taxes from your wages. The less taxes I need to pay the better off it will be for most people anyway. North Carolina alone charges about a dollar on taxes in just gasoline alone.

Even though I hate Verizon, hell if I was them I would be trying to dodge taxes too.

It does when the article makes no distinction between tax avoidance which is legal and tax evasion which is not.

This 'study' was just a hit piece by people who have either no idea of how the tax code works or they just want to take an unjustified attack on corporations.

On what grounds? If all their deductions are legal then they are breaking no laws.

I would presume you agree that the federal government should crack down on private entities which do not pay taxes they legally owe *cough*Berkshire Hathaway*cough*.

Tax dodgers? Are you serious? The tax code is a mess, but until we rewrite it, abiding by the code and paying the requisite levy is hardly dodging taxes.
