The PigBazinaPremium join:2009-09-11 | Not saying to not buy Electric cars just wait a bit longer A Chevrolet Volt that caught fire three weeks after its lithium-ion battery was damaged in a government crash test has regulators taking a harder look at the safety of electric car batteries, federal officials said Friday.

KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | does not surprise me that it happened... considering the little LI-ION batteries used in laptops warn not to damage or puncture. and they have even caught fire after development of mfg related shorts.(see the major recalls of incendiary laptops).
I guess the question would be as batteries get bigger and denser in cars how to protect them since modern cars do not have the big thick chassis rails underneath to hide things between. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

 | Ya because ONLY hybrid cars ever had fire issues, I mean no one has a cruise control switch catch on fire right? |

CylonRedPremium,MVM join:2000-07-06 Bloom County | My brother had a Jeep back in the 80's - no cruise control - he went to pick up his paycheck and in less than 5 minutes his car caught file in the parking lot.
Just google or yahoo for 'cars catch fire in garage' - some of the stories are parking garages but same thing can happen in a house garage. -- Brian

| reply to The Pig ""October 2009 Update: Ford Recalls Another 4.5 million Vehicles Due To Fire Risk
On October 13, 2009, Ford Motor Co. expanded its largest-ever recall by about 4.5 million vehicles equipped with a faulty cruise-control switch linked to at least 550 vehicle fires nationwide, and the destruction of many homes and other properties. Ford has now recalled more than 14 million vehicles in eight separate recalls over a 10-year period because of the problem.""

 | reply to CylonRed There are multi-millions of conventional vehicles on the road. There are VERY few hybrid/electric vehicles on the road. Therefore, what would be a MINOR trend in conventional vehicles, becomes a MAJOR trend in Hybrid/electric vehicles. If 100 F-150 PUs have an issue, it is a MINOR problem. If 100 Corvettes have the exact same issue, it is a MAJOR problem. Why ? There are probably 1,000 F-150s produced for every Corvette that comes off of the line. |

 | So cars catching on fire... not a big issue... because your made up stats say otherwise?
I mentioned the cruise issue another poster got the exact info...
I'd call a recall on 4.5 million vehicles... a pretty BIG issue...
And a total of 14... over the same issue...
Um... ya let's have your house catch on fire while you are asleep... and then just tell you "o well it is only you so... you almost died but, not a big deal"
I guess according to here between japan and the usa, 600,000 hybrids are on the road... hardly a small number »www.tech-faq.com/how-many-hybrid···oad.html |

As mentioned already - been large recalls int eh past for regular cars catching fire. -- Brian

| reply to The Pig The Volt has been ruled out as a cause in both house fires
The crash test one, NHTSA didn't follow the manufactures procedures to discharge that battery, which 3 weeks later after the the side impact crash test, the coolant, when frozen, shorted out the still charged battery

There is nothing to fix, the Volts were cleared from being the cause of the residential fires. |
