GoggalorPsychonautPremium join:2009-06-09 Your Mind! kudos:1 | Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword I do not know about the rest of you all, but I am a huge Zelda buff. If not for Zelda, I doubt I would have picked up a 3DS or Wii.
Back to the thread title: it looks like Nintendo has done it again. IGN released an early review of it and has give the game a 10/10. Here are the reviewers closing comments:
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be remembered for revitalizing a franchise that had, for a time, seemingly settled for being merely great instead of revolutionary. Once again, Nintendo is demonstrating its unparalleled ability to craft some of the greatest gameplay this industry has ever seen. Remarkably, this Zelda game manages to reshape its control scheme, design sensibility and pacing all at once while still telling a brilliantly powerful story featuring some very memorable characters. Increasingly Nintendo refuses to compromise cinematic storytelling for gameplay, finding a balance that seems effortless.
It's fitting that Skyward Sword arrives on Zelda's 25th anniversary, because it truly pulls from the franchise's entire history, even addressing the winding narrative directly within its story. It captures a grandness and scope we haven't seen since the 2D era. It advances combat and control in the most significant way since Ocarina of Time. It finds a tonal and visual harmony between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. And, most importantly, it leaves a mark on the franchise that future installments will no doubt draw inspiration from for years to come.
This is the Wii game we've been waiting for. Through all of the mini-games and odd sports collections, many wondered if and when Nintendo would ever find a way to deliver a deeper experience that still fulfilled on Wii's limitless potential. Skyward Sword makes good on that promise. So, dust off your nunchucks and get ready to thrust the Master Sword through some Moblins. -- From Psychonauts - Lungfish Civilian: (describing Goggalor) He's impervious to bullets! ... and love! -- |

Skyward Sword feels like the Legend of Zelda game producer Eiji Aonuma always wanted to make. As director of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, he first pushed against then tried to imitate the towering Ocarina of Time; now he is simply and confidently stepping away from its decade-long shadow. It is the most formally inventive Zelda in a long time (admittedly, that's not saying a great deal). But it's the game's carefree attitude, quick tempo and warm heart that do the most to make it feel new.
Maybe you've played enough Zelda games by now that even that won't be enough to cleanse your palate. That would be a fair response, but if it's so, this game wasn't made for you. Like a tale told from one generation to the next, the point is to keep the tradition alive for others - and for them, Skyward Sword will surely be the greatest adventure money can buy. -- From Psychonauts - Lungfish Civilian: (describing Goggalor) He's impervious to bullets! ... and love! -- |

 | reply to Goggalor Can't wait. I'll have to see about user reviews once it's been out a while to see if it lives up to the Magazines' raves. |

Spork join:2011-07-13 Methuen, MA | reply to Goggalor So far so good on this. I had a killed headache yesterday but I bought it anyways and played for an hour. I'm starting to get back into Zelda for the Wii since the last one was so long ago. The only thing I didn't like was needing to buy a MotionPlus thingy to play it. Game wise it looks to be another home run for Nintendo. -- "We are the Borg. You WILL be assimilated!" -ST:TNG |

I want this game, but like many, haven't touched my Wii much lately, so I know I need that.
Thoughts on the game so far? |

Spork join:2011-07-13 Methuen, MA | reply to Goggalor Pretty good so far. It's been called the game of the century for consoles as it's gotten the highest reviews ever. Well deserved I might add. The estimate is 100 hours to do everything and I'm at about 30 right now.
A few thing I don't like is I tend to cap on rupee's and can't get a bigger wallet until I advance further in the game first. It's forced me to leave in the middle of a dungeon twice to spend it on 'crap' since that's better then wasting it on nothing.
The only other rough part is 'farming' in a Zelda game. In order to upgrade stuff you need treasures and to get those you need to 'farm' them. You can skip upgrading stuff though so I guess if you don't mind subpar gear you can skip 'farming'. -- "We are the Borg. You WILL be assimilated!" -ST:TNG |

LaZ3RPremium join:2003-01-17 | reply to Goggalor There have been quite a few parts so far where I've literally been "stuck" for more than 10 minutes trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong ... and on top of that, some boss fights are incredibly difficult (compared to past zelda games)
I'm enjoying it so far. I'm almost 35 hours in and still have a bit left to do until beating the main story which is pretty good, though on the second play through I'll hopefully do it faster -- Life is a game of blackjack. You keep playing until you bust. |

Some of the things they have you do is just so unusual and simple that you just don't figure it out fast. A few bosses take some work to figure out how to handle them. -- "We are the Borg. LaZ3RPremium join:2003-01-17 | reply to Goggalor Okay, now that I've beaten the game... I can safely say that this is the best Zelda game released to date.
I won't ruin the plot or anything, but the overall design of everything was just amazing. Controls really got me into the game, music and sounds were amazing, dungeon layouts, puzzles, plot development, character development, humour aspects, all of it... amazing.
What a well designed game with clearly a lot of work and dedication put into it. -- Life is a game of blackjack. You keep playing until you bust. |

Good to hear. Once I am done with Skyrim (which will still be a while), I plan to beat Twilight Princess (yeah, yeah; got near the end of the game and got sidetracked with other games ) and then Skyward Sword. |

Working on the first of 3 parts to upgrade the sword now. At the boss so more like 1/3 on upgrading the sword. I farmed 8-10 of all the upgrade items so everything is capped out. Kept getting rupee capped so worked on a wallet also. -- "We are the Borg. You WILL be assimilated!" -ST:TNG |

 | reply to Goggalor I realize this thread is old, but I got this game (and a new controller) for Christmas, and I gotta say, I'm loving it so far. Some of the puzzles have had me stumped for some time, but I'm progressing well and enjoying it immensely. I'm currently up to the desert area with the tumbleweeds.
This game is like Ocarina was to me on the N64, THE game to have. It's fun, easy to pick up, challenging, and it doesn't get old slashing grass for rupies.
....and catching bugs. |
|
GoggalorPsychonautPremium join:2009-06-09 Your Mind! kudos:1 | I picked it up the day it came up, but been busy with other games up until this week when I finally said eff it and put it in. Also, in the desert area like you, capt, and have been stumped by some of the puzzles as well (like the eyeballs in Forest Temple).
However, the bug catching is a pain in the ass since they're so small. Maybe I just need the bigger net upgrade... |

My complaint about it is that for me, I usually don't see the bugs until I'm on top of them, and as soon as you pull the net, you have like 3 seconds to catch it, which can be difficult when you're swinging your arm and he doesn't do the same movement.......
But still, it's a lot of fun to play. |

 | reply to Goggalor Once you get the upgraded net it's ten times easier. The starting net is almost impossible to get bugs with unless your good. The final net is like fishing with TNT. You always get something! |
