jmorlanHmm... That's funny.Premium,MVM join:2001-02-05 Pacifica, CA kudos:4 | [Help Me] Firewall settings for N150 I just replaced a dead LinkSys with a brand new N150 (DIR-601). My Chatzilla connections keep being reset every few minutes. The Chatzilla help indicates it's probably a firewall setting. quote: [ERROR] Connection to ircs://irc.freenode.net:6697/ (ircs://irc.freenode.net:6697/) reset. [Help]
I looked at the Firewall setting suggestions at
»www.dlink.com/support/faq/?prod_id=1337
but these appear to be for different routers and different software. I tried adding a Chatzilla application rule to allow port 6697 but it doesn't seem to be helping. This issue did not exist with the old Linksys (WRT54G).
Thanks in advance. |

The router I bought already has the latest firmware. |

2.3. What if I get an error connecting? Don't panic - it all depends on the error. We have covered the most common errors and possible causes in the list below, but if you are getting a different error or you can't solve the problem, you can join us in our IRC channel and we'll do our best to help you. If you can't even connect there, please post to the newsgroup instead.
Unknown host irc.example.com connecting to irc://irc.example.com/ (irc.example.com:6667).
Check DNS settings. Can you get to other IRC servers or websites? If not, you might need to adjust your DNS settings or your ISP's DNS servers might be experiencing problems. Check the server name. Make sure you are attempting to connect to the correct server. Check with the network's website if you can. Connection to irc://irc.example.com/ (irc.example.com:6667) timed out.
Check anti-virus and firewall settings. Your anti-virus or firewall could be responsible for this error. Check to make sure they are not blocking "IRC" or "TCP port 6667 outgoing". Connection to irc://irc.example.com/ (irc.example.com:6667) refused.
Check the server port. Make sure you are attempting to connect on the correct port (6667 in the example above). Check with the network's website if you can. Check anti-virus and firewall settings. Your anti-virus or firewall could be responsible for this error. Check to make sure they are not blocking "IRC" or "TCP port 6667 outgoing". Connection to irc://irc.example.com/ (irc.example.com:6667) closed.
Check ZoneAlarm Internet Security settings. If you have ZoneAlarm Internet Security installed, make sure the "Block IRC" option in "IMSecurity" > "Settings" > "Advanced" is not selected. Check anti-virus and firewall settings. Your anti-virus or firewall could be responsible for this error. Check to make sure they are not blocking "IRC" or "TCP port 6667 outgoing". Connection to irc://irc.example.com/ (irc.example.com:6667) reset.
Check McAfee Anti-Virus settings. If you have McAfee Anti-Virus installed, make sure the rules for ports 6666 - 6669 in "VirusScan Console" > "Access Protection" are disabled. Check anti-virus and firewall settings. Even if your anti-virus and firewall are not listed above, they could still be responsible for this error. Check to make sure they are not blocking IRC or port 6667. ERROR Closing Link: irc.example.com (Install IdentD)
Check IdentD settings. The server is requiring you to enable the identification service (IdentD). Check gateway/router/NAT settings. If you already have an identification service running, check to make sure computers on the internet can contact it. This usually means allowing inbound connections to TCP port 113 in your firewall, and forwarding the same port in your gateway, router or NAT device. |

This error means that ChatZilla was able to open the connection initially, but the connection was then closed unexpectedly. The most likely reason for this is that your anti-virus software or firewall software is configured to block IRC.
McAfee Anti-Virus is known to do this and you will need to unblock the IRC ports to use any IRC client; you can do this from the "Access Protection" area in the "VirusScan Console" by disabling the rules for ports 6666-6669. Consult your anti-virus program's documentation for instructions on how to do this for other anti-virus programs.
Although less common, any computer between you and the server can cause this error, so it could just be a reset or reboot of your DSL router, or a local network configuration change. In these cases, the error should only be temporary, and you will be able to try to connect again in a few seconds (ChatZilla should retry for you). This is the error I am getting. The reset is temporary and Chatzilla does reconnect automatically. It's just that this behavior is new with this router and did not exist with my old router. Could it be that the router is timing out periodically on the connection? Is there a setting that will keep the connection alive? Or did I get a bad router? |

slpip3 join:2007-02-20 Springfield, VA 2 edits | It seems like the ChatZilla is address sensitive. Since the computer worked fine with the previous router, the anti virus program on the computer should not be the problem. The only firewall protection on the DIR-601 should set according to the attachment -- use the Endpoint Independent instead of the Address Restricted.
Make sure you use the same wireless security mode like the previous router, WEP or WPA whatever the same as before. |
