But for long haul driving an economic sedan will be just as good as any hybrid... actually what would be a big boon for MPG would be if the US could accept small diesels. but that would also require gas stations not near freeways to carry diesel.(I have seen many lately that dont unless they are by an onramp/offramp.) -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

Looking at the Pontiac Aztek and some hybrids, the basic shape is definitely similar, but as I've already mentioned, there are some good reasons for that shape. As government mandated mpg numbers will increase, the cars likely to get more aerodynamic bodies, and while a sportscar's (i.e. Corvette's) shape can have a very good Cv, it's not very practical for some uses. -- Arguing with an idiot makes you one. |

| reply to lolvoltlolz How so? If someone has the money to buy the Volt, and don't drive a lot of miles everyday, they can basically say bye bye to gas. The Prius is made for city driving as well, but you're still buying gas. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

TomekPremium join:2002-01-30 Valley Stream, NY | reply to aurgathor I think that EV technology is not mature yet for wide adoption.
So car makers are experimenting in their garages for most efficient use cases. I follow mostly Audi. It seems that EV is targeted towards city driving with small car sizes. One of audi's latest attempts was to supplement electric only car with a tiny gas engine to charge batteries when they get low.
I commute 50 miles to work, if there was a car with range of 50+ miles and my work would offer free charging station then I would consider electric vehicle. -- Semper Fi |

| reply to Tomek The average one way daily commute to work is 16 miles ( »askville.amazon.com/average-comm···=2554434 ) meaning that an electric car capable of only 50 - 60 miles should suffice for many people. -- Wacky Races 2012! |

A solution is needed for people who drive a lot of miles every day and therefore pollute a lot. NONE of the hybrids provide ANY solution to the problem. They are basically high priced "feel good" toys. They provide NO SOLUTION to the problem. |

They are basically high priced "feel good" toys. They provide NO (real) SOLUTION to the problem. That's true for a commuter that does a 60 miles each way trip. But you're right, it is a 'feel good' toy. Regardless, with the Volt, if a person does about 30 miles a day, or 11,000 miles per year, it would suit them fine.
Not sure if we will see a real solution any time soon. Even if we get the batteries where we'd want them to be, quick charges, etc, you're still burning 'fuel' to produce energy for the car a lot of the time. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

CylonRedPremium,MVM join:2000-07-06 Bloom County | reply to Waterbug They are interim and needed to get to the next step. If the Volt was a better price and I believed GM could make a decent car - it would be perfect for me. I live 2 miles from work and electric for us is fairly inexpensive - I could save couple hundred a year.
Repeat after me - early adopters = good. Without them - technology updates get slower. -- Brian

KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | reply to aurgathor Actually per mile traveled the freeway commuter will pollute less per mile driven barring heavy traffic than the person who commutes a short distance through town.
the problem is the utopia dream of the electric car depends on things like nuclear energy which will never get new plants in this country.
Hell even alternative energy cant get built due to NIMBY. want to place wind turbines 10 miles off shore? some overly rich waste of oxygen will complain they can somehow magically see those white slivers on the horizon and it will lower the value of their beach homes. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |
