| [bug] Posts have no word-wrap, and are too wide, in TSI Dir.Foru Hi!
On the Teksavvy Direct forum, when I created a new thread yesterday, I paste(d?) in a bunch of text from a yahoo email. The screen immediately created a HORIZONTAL scroll bar, and there appears to be no automatic word-wrap in the body of the post. So, to read a message, I have to constantly scroll the screen right and left. This happens not only in the preview when creating the post, but when I go back to read it later I have to do the horizontal scrolling.
I thought it was my browser zoom level causing the problem; I normally use 125% in IE8, and 120% in Chrome15, but even when I go back to 100% I still have a horizontal scroll bar.
Perhaps I can explain the horiz. scroll bar when I am at 100% zoom... I have my Windows Task Bar on the left side, instead of the bottom (yes, it IS easily movable; try it!), so all 1600 pixels width of my video resolution are not available for applications. Your application (web page) SHOULD pick up the new available horizontal size from my OS, and actual window starting point, but it apparently is not. It still thinks it has 1600 pixels for a window, when it does not. So, when it DOES do a word-wrap, it does not do it properly.
I can go from full-size window, to a smaller window, to full-screen, and I still end up with a HORIZ scroll bar. Obviously, unless I only had a piddly 640 pixels in width, your screens should adjust to MY window width.
The odd thing is... this does NOT happen in the public Teksavvy forum, or the public Canadian Broadband forum. The lines all adjust automatically to whatever window size they are viewed in, and they adjust for the browser zoom level too.
AND... I have just noticed, looking at this post's preview, that this is not a problem here in this forum either.
So, the basic design behind at least the Teksavvy Direct forum must be different than the public forum. But, I'm sure I've posted in that forum before and never noticed this wrap problem.
Hope you can fix that! (Or tell me what I might have done, or included in my post, that has turned the automatic word-wrap off!)
| | Re: [bug] Posts have no word-wrap, and are too wide, in TSI Dir.Since I can't see the post to see what's wrong with it, you can try putting the copy and paste from yahoo into a code block.
copy/paste
| | 2 edits | Ohhhhhhhh! Duhhhhhhh! My Bad!
I see where you're going... probably all the special characters in the email paste, including lots of less-than signs, are messing things up. I just went to the Post Examples page, and read up on message formatting; it is much clearer now. I had only ever used bold, and bquote/autoquote before.
Thanx, FB!
The only special characters I originally replaced were the very first ones around my first email address; I left the other 17 or so occurrences alone!
And I must say that The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog... Will this line wrap or be truncated, or will there be a horiz scroll bar?
So, below is a paste with similar email content to what I posted on TSI Direct before, apparently incorrectly... It has lots of special characters, and also has many long lines. Will these lines outside the code blocks now wrap properly?. They are NOT doing so in the initial preview window, although my window width could have gotten screwed up on the first preview that still had bad data in it.

| | | Happy to help. | | | Good Morning...
Hmmm... perhaps this is not completely explained yet...
I'm looking at this Bug Forum thread right now, in IE8, at 75% zoom and the normal text in my messages is NOT word-wrapped properly. I must scroll horizontally to see the text... No matter if I go to 100%, small window, max window, full screen, the plain text does not wrap. I had to scroll twice to the right to even find the REPLY button to post this.
In Chrome15, this thread wraps my plain text properly; all zooms, all screen sizes.
BUT...
Now, when I go over to the TSI Direct forum and look at that thread I posted there, it is messed up (no proper word wrap) in both IE8 and Chrome15.
So, I cannot simply blame IE8 (which is normally easy to do).
Do you see all the plain text here without Hscrolling? What Browser?
I don't understand the discrepancies... | | Host: General Questions Windstream Canadian Chat TekSavvy For Sale/Wanted
| The code block has it's own scroll bar rather than blow the margins on the page itself for me.
Safari 5.1.1 on Mac

| | 1 edit | Yeah, I see the HScroll bars for the code blocks. But I'm talking about my plain text, outside of the code blocks. They are NOT wrapping properly here. OK for you there?
Well, I must get back to troubleshooting my real problem... yahoo.ca to pppoe.ca emails being rejected, error 452.
I'll put the scrolling/wrap problem down as item #358 on the Jurassic Park glitch list! (and try to head to the Test Forum later, to post some formatting tests). | | Host: General Questions Windstream Canadian Chat TekSavvy For Sale/Wanted
| The text outside the code block wraps fine. | | | OK, thanks again FB! I'll try test this more later... MAYBE IE8 IS just pure crap, and MAYBE my original message in TSI Direct is just so screwed up that even Chrome15 can't display it properly either.
I'll even try looking at these by Firefox3, on my old Win2K machine, and see how it fares. | | sashwaPixie Cat Crunchin' n Foldin'Premium,Mod join:2001-01-29 Alcatraz kudos:14 Reviews:

1 edit | For what it's worth, the code boxes blow my margins out big time most of the time even though I have the scroll bar with them. It's been like this since the last time Justin worked on the site.
I'm using IE8.
-- TH ~ NE ~ EPN ~ NC ~ TD | | 1 edit | reply to jasmo34 OK... just a little more info from my testing...
My original post in TSI Direct must just be messed up, with the junk from my original improper paste. It also does not wrap the long lines properly when displayed using FF3, or IE6.
THIS thread DOES wrap lines properly in FF3, but not in IE6.
SO, FF3 and Chrome15 display this thread properly for me, with lines wrapped properly; and Safari 5.1.1.
IE6 and IE8 do NOT display this thread properly, for me!
But, then again, I've never really noticed this problem before in IE8. It still could be something in particular that I've imbedded/inserted here, that IE just doesn't like.
I will still do a few more tests, when I have time.
~~~ later ~~~
OK, I installed Firefox 8.0 here, under WinXP. It DOES display this thread properly, with lines wrapped properly, at various zoom levels, small window, maximized window, full screen, all with no HScroll bar (well, until you make the window Real narrow; there must be some minimum width, and then the HScroll bar appears).
And again, even FF8 has some problems with that 'badly-formatted' thread I started in TSI DIRECT.
So, your viewing mileage may vary depending upon your browser. I would recommend everyone have at least ONE other browser other than IE installed on their system, even if just for occasional 'real-world' testing.
