 | [AB] New Telus Actiontec V100h firmware broke my WoL setup So Telus just pushed an upgrade out to my Actiontec V1000h modem/router, which disabled my method of getting WoL to work. I noticed that it all of a sudden stopped working (probably due to a reboot after the FW upgrade).
Nothing persists by default in the arp cache on the Actiontec, so when my computer is off, the router doesn't know where to send the magic packet. The way I used to get around this was to ssh into the router and add a static arp entry. This worked until the router rebooted, when I would have to add the static entry again.
Now, as seen in the changes below, they've disabled ssh and taken away my option of adding this static entry. I understand Telus not wanting people to muck around with the settings too much and screw up their custom QoS stuff, but this seems absurd. You pretty much cannot do any reasonable customization with this equipment.
. Changes in 31.30L.55: o Updated HPNA driver . Improve noise resiliency, CG3210H 1.9.4 Nov 29 2010 16:11:18 o Updated DSL driver . Improve/Elimination of .No IP after-retrain defect., SRA fixed o A2pv6C035f.d23i o Sorrenson Video Relay service fixed o Closed the Open DNS on WAN interface, randomized DNS source port o HDM Periodic Inform . randomized o Admin Password Reminder changed o Hidden pages removed from admin user access o Added Option 67 reply o Closed Local SSH ability from LAN client to V1000H o Upgraded SSL certificate
My question is: Has anybody come up with a way around some of these limitations? Should I buy the router outright from Telus and change the firmware somehow? Should I just complain to Telus until they provide me with a reasonable alternative? |

 | not sure if you can still do this, but when i had a 2wire i bought a router and customized from there. the only thing the 2wire did was send an ip address to the router, and was basically acting like a router sending its dhcp ip address to my new router (something like 192.168.0.1 etc) and then my new router was the computer with 4 outputs sharing internet access to my 4 devices. i guess it was just a modem that sent a router ip address instead of a normal ip address from the server. i'm not sure if you can do that with newer modems but its just a thought. hope it helps. |

TWU @shawcable.net | reply to AGuyInAPlace Are you doing WOL on the LAN side of things or via the internet? My V1000H works fine on the lan for WOL.
I'm thinking you are doing this from the internet.
You should never have to use a static entry for WOL on a LAN. L2 Switchs never care about an IP address. They only care about mac-addresses. The WOL is using a Broadcast MAC so every port should be flooded too.
If you are doing this from teh internet maybe you can port forward UDP port 9 to the subnet broadcast IP.
192.168.1.255 is 192.168.1.0/24 boardcast ip |

 | reply to AGuyInAPlace Yes, I should've specified, I'm sending the WoL packet from my Android phone over 3G. It works fine for me as well internal to the LAN. I believe I've tried sending it to the broadcast IP before, but I think that the Actiontec doesn't forward broadcast packets from outside of the LAN.
I'll try setting it up that way again tonight or tomorrow to confirm if it works or not. I think that's why I ended up creating the static ARP entry in the first place. Since it wasn't forwarding the broadcast sent from outside the LAN, it wasn't able to find the MAC of my computer unless it was hard-coded into the table. |

| reply to AGuyInAPlace Why not get a router that has the ability to send the WoL packet directly from the router itself through a remote management interface? Or better yet, a router that has scripting abilities that would allow you to set up specific triggers for sending the WoL packet? |
|
 | Why bother buying a router when you don't need to. Just port forward to the broadcast ip. |
|
 | Here are the problems on why I still can't this working:
1) I can't port forward to the broadcast IP, the Actiontec V1000h seems to just drop broadcast packets. 2) I can't put the Actiontec into bridge mode either, so having a two router setup is out of the question (Double NAT and all).
That said, the reason this worked for me before was because of that static entry in the ARP cache, I was able to send a non-broadcast packet, and it was still able to find the system to wake up since it still existed in the ARP table. I can't think of anything else to try to get this going though. |

 | reply to AGuyInAPlace Thanks to a very nice individual on this forum, I was able to get the new Telus root password and get my WoL working again.
Once in with Root, I was able to temporarily enable local telnet into the router which allowed me to create my static ARP entry. Hooray |
|
 | could someone please tell me if there is a way to back up the firmware? |

Re: [AB] New Telus Actiontec V100h firmware broke my WoL setup Hi I am having the same problem as you with wol after Telus upgraded the firmware on my actiontec v1000h router. I am wondering if you would share the information on how to access to gain access to the router in order to re-establish a static arp entry. Thanks |

 | reply to AGuyInAPlace If someone would be able to PM me the V1000H root or tech pass, that would be much appreciated !
It's so frustrating how they cripple it :/ seriously.. hardcoded backdoor accounts too? I wish I could get a modem without this garbage. |

 | maybe if we keep on bitching they might get the message to start using proper hardware , but then again we are not the average user so our opinions do not matter. |
