allen86 join:2011-11-18 Cleveland, TX 1 edit | No signal on Motorola 3347 - but signal on 2wire Last night about 6PM when I went to use the internet, I couldn't get on and noticed the DSL light was red on the motorola 3347. After restarting it, unplugging everything and checking all my lines the light just stayed off and blinked green everynow and then so.. I just figured I'd call support in the morning.
After calling support and given the usual run around check up stuff, they said they'd call me back in an hour, I figured I'd try one of my old broken (using wireless on them causes constant DSL disconnects) 2wire modems. So I plugged it up and the DSL light came on like there were no issues and was able to surf the internet and do everything just fine (its how I'm typing this up).
So instead of waiting for ATT to call me back at their leisure, with this new information I called up the tech support and they transferred me to their more knowledgeable guys I suppose with my ticket information.
He (charles/charlie) said that he had found an issue on the line, which he corrected and said that may have been causing the issue with the Motorola but the Motorola still wouldn't pick up a signal.
So he ran a test with the 2wire hooked up and said everything looked 100% signal wise and everything was more than perfect. Then he told me to hook up the Motorola to see what he would see and said he got nothing back from it and told me it was probably dead.
I got this Motorola 3347 modem about 6 months ago from a tech as a last ditch effort to fix my disconnect issue after having him out to my house multiple times amongst other techs (which it did fix the disconnect issues). Before that, everytime wireless connection was used on the 2wires I've had..the connection would drop out for everyone many times an hour...almost like it couldn't handle 2 people on it at the same time if one of them were using wireless. I've literally had amazing service since using this motorola, I couldn't ask for better service..had nothing but trouble with those 2wires.
I'm really not sure of the lifespans of these modems but from what I've read the Motorola 3347 is supposed to be one of the best and most reliable modems out there, I just don't see how it would just drop dead all of a sudden. I was wondering if there is something I can do to try to fix it or if there may be something else causing the issue?
I was denied replacement of the modem of any kind. Have had 6mb/s elite speed for 4 years. |

 | The 2Wire 2701HG-B can detect a signal on either pair of the incoming line, while the 3347 can only use the inner pair.
That said, if things were working with the 3347, your house wouldn't have rewired itself. So, the modem could be defective (even the best-made products can fail). Have you tried another AC adapter (12 VDC, 750 mA or higher, center pin= positive)? Can you take the 3347 over to a friend's house to see if it works there? |

I realize that even good products can go bad, just didn't expect it so soon and didn't expect it to turn on and be entirely functional except not display dsl signal you know. |

 | reply to allen86 The Belkin 12V UPS (»en-us-support.belkin.com/app/pro···il/p/667) that is used with the AT&T U-Verse Residential Gateway is a perfect power supply for the 3347, if you can find someone who will loan you one of these to try it. Sometimes, these UPS's show up in thrift stores or other used-merchandise venues for a few dollars. If you find one where the battery is defective, it will still power the modem OK, but I suggest disconnecting one terminal of the defective battery.
The Belkin UPS comes in an older (black) and a newer (gray) version- either will work fine with the 3347. |

allen86 join:2011-11-18 Cleveland, TX | reply to allen86 If it ends up being the modem, what are my options for replacement? On ATT website it only shows the 2Wire and Motorola 3347 that I have. Is there any other good cheap modems out there that would be good for 2 wired connections and wireless? Since ATT is forcing me to provide my own, I don't have any other choice. I've gotten 1 legitimate replacement modem from ATT throughout 4 years of having 6mbs service, its just ridiculous..especially since the last one only lasted about 6 months until it started dropping out when wireless was used. |

 | reply to allen86 I've often been able to fix the 2wire wireless issue you're talking about (it's been around since the 2701 was introduced), by changing the modem from 802.11b/g to either b or g only. The vast majority of the time that fixes the disconnect issue. Give it a try. -- Shop SMART!, Shop S-Mart! |

allen86 join:2011-11-18 Cleveland, TX | Which one should I set it to Quark? What's the difference between the two? |
|
allen86 join:2011-11-18 Cleveland, TX | reply to quarkmachine I changed it to the b setting for now, I googled what you suggested quark just to get some more information about it and there's a 10 page thread on ATT's forum about it. Thanks for the heads up, I really hope this solves the issue.
It just blows my mind that I've been dealing with this problem for years and none of the ATT service reps suggested this as a possible fix...that and the 6 different technicians that came to my home. You'd figure they'd cover their bases on something that seems to be such a large scale issue. Anyways, I'll update this thread to see how it goes in any case another person searches about this issue and stumbles across it, there will atleast be another definite answer how to fix these disconnects...hopefully the 1000th time is the charm |

allen86 join:2011-11-18 Cleveland, TX | It's been a few weeks so I thought I'd follow up. I've yet to get any type of disconnect since I switched the settings over as suggested. Everything seems to be running smoothly and as intended now, so it seems I've finally been able to reach the light at the end of the tunnel I've spent 3 years traveling down. Either way, I'm glad to say I don't have to deal with ATT tech support anymore (for now). This setting really should be in their suggestions for customers to try and at the very least let the technicians know so when they come across this issue, they wouldn't be left at customers houses clueless. It's a small thing to do to keep from having repeat calls and unsatisfied customers over such a small change in the configuration. |
