Clear has changed support for PURCHASED MODEMS

Clear's Tech Support Director [Yes I went that far] told me that their support has changed for people who purchased their modems from Clear rather than sign their two year contract.
They no longer replace a defective modem. You have to send the modem to them and they take ! 6 to 8 ! weeks to try and find the problem. IF THEY CAN NOT REPLICATE YOUR PROBLEM, THEY KEEP YOUR MODEM AND YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW MODEM!!!

Anyone planning to purchase a modem under Clear's NEW PRICING PLAN, remember you have NO support. If you have a problem, you have to purchase a NEW modem.

even if true, still cheaper to buy a replacement modem off ebay than the high rental fees. If you're starting a new acct just buy a NIB modem off ebay and then start your new acct. $50 does seem steep for a new acct though.

There's only a 1 yr manufacturer warranty on purchased modems anyways maybe the policy you mentioned is after 1 yr? Your tech support director could have just been a random call rep saying that was their title so you'd stop asking to be transferred to someone higher up... their support people are all idiots. When my first usb modem died, I called in and they could send me a replacement but I wanted the UBEE modem. They said it would cost me $50+9.99 shipping so I said fine(said no way to warranty replace and upgrade at the same time). This simple call lasted over 1hr for the rep to figure out how to do anything. Few days later, two UBEE modems showed up and I was only charged 2x4.95 shipping (+$0 for the modems). Somehow both modems were activated as well on a single modem portion of the account.

If you want to buy an eBay device get the MAC ID number first and see if it will Validate on the Clear site. No matter what the seller tells you if the device will not Validate don't buy.

Thanks for the MAC ID warning. I was thinking about purchasing a backup modem, but I will request MAC from seller before bid if it is not listed in the ebay description.
