[Network] speed drop: 3mbps to 0.3mbps most evenings= most eveni

Have recently increased from 1.5mbps plan to 3.0mbps and was pleased to actually experience that speed. however, it doesn't "stay" at that rate. It falls to 1/10 of the 3.0mbps plan. 4 out of the past 5 evenings. (I'm paying attention and an inflated bill for a service i don't get).
this is in S/W Arkansas.
I guess i can call WINSTREAM CUSTOMER SERVICE?

Re: [Network] speed drop: 3mbps to 0.3mbps most evenings= most e

I am replying to my own post, above, in rural Arkansas... in southern Montgomery Co.
It took me a while to remember my user name, etc.
SO, bandwidth drops to 0.5mbps download (about same upload) from 3mbps daily. in evening hours.
at present, it's at 0.4 mbps download; with 0.57mbps upload.

QUESTION: will it ever get better? Are there any (reasonably priced) alternatives? Is there any way to ask WINDSTREAM for a discount based upon lackluster results?

Thanks, for any advice. assistance.

regards,
Pablo

These 1st 3 posts are all by the same guy. it's a hassle to log in. but here is what I've discovered.
For what it's worth. I turned off the router/modem; waited a few minutes & turned everything back on. Speeds increased-- not to 3mbps as advertised, but closer to 2mbps. later, when slowed down again (I was trying to watch football game on laptop). I repeated process. speed increased again.

Pablo

It sounds like there may be a provisioning error (probably caused by your recent upgrade). Please post your information in »Windstream Direct so that I can investigate. Chances are this is a very simple fix.

Have your speeds stabilized?

Thank you for your interest.
No, speeds have not stabilized. I've gotten used to slow evening speeds. During day or early A.M. no problem.
7 PM to 11 PM or so... slows from 3Mbps to less than 1/5 or 0.6Mbps-- tonight is barely 1/10 or 0.3Mbps... it's too slow to capture via DSL global broadband test at speedtest.net

I have posted a response in the direct forum, also I have one of our network analysts monitoring your connection during peak hours. When/if we see a problem we will be able to form a plan of attack.

Aaron:
Very kind of you to attend to this matter. I hope that i can remain a Windstream customer. Frankly, in my rural area there are no "economically reasonable" alternatives for broadband service.

Though speeds have dropped since you "re-provisioned' (?right terminology?) my connection... it seems more stable, so far.

P. S. (Montgomery Co. Arkansas)

Keep an eye on it and let me know if anything changes. Currently your operational mode is set to interleaved which is more stable but it does sometimes impact the overall speeds or the ping times.

well, FYI... the current status is as follows: (in rural Arkansas- 30 miles west/southwest of Hot Springs )

the configuration at speedtest.net can't load (too slow?)

but DSL test at SPEAKEASY gives 0.07 mbps download; and 0.13 mbps upload ...

pabloAR-
We have found some cable issues in your area that is interfering with broadband signals. Technicians will be in you area over the weekend and probably the first part of next week to resolve the errors on the line. I have posted specifics for you on the Direct forum.

pabloAR-
Just wanted to remind that you should see some technicians out in the area over the weekend and early next week working on the cables. Didn't want you to be surprised if you saw them poking around.

Hello Windstream tech, other customers:

FYI: /update:

speeds still typically "nose dive" in the evenings. here is the current result using speedtest.net...

ALSO: I've seen some cable/telephone line work (could be electrical utility, but doubt that) but this work is along highway 70 near Pearcy, Ark. some 15 to 20 miles away -- toward Hot Springs. I wonder if this is the work you are speaking of? Other than that, I've not seen any sign of work along cables, telephone lines, etc. nearby.

Thanks, for your interest.

I"ve tried to reply to this thread... disappeared?
basically, DSL speeds are still erratic & mostly disappointing in the evenings.
here is a typical result for the 3mps service I purchase from Windstream in Montgomery County, Arkansas.

p.s. I've not seen any "cable/line" work nearby (within 10 miles). However, I have seen some "cable/line" work-- possibly related to WINDSTREAM, but can't tell... could be contractors- but some 15 to 20 miles away near community of Pearcy, Ark. (on Highway 70, towards Hot Springs, Ark).
thanks, P. Shepard

I will start digging back into it. I apologize I haven't seen your posts. The cables you saw being worked on were one of the main feeds for the equipment in your area. I will let you know what I find.

Apparently the technicians are in the process of conditioning all the lines while they are assigned to the area. They are doing this to avoid future problems. While they work on individual spans the traffic from the span they are working on is re-routed to another span causing utilization issues (slow speeds). This is not an over-subscription issue, it is a physical issue. I apologize that I was not aware of the amount of time/work it would take to get the trouble fixed. The technicians are still working on it and should have it resolved soon. I will give you a specific repair schedule as soon a I get one. I do not expect that it will take more than a week or two longer (worst case scenario). Again I apologize the work has been this in-depth and has taken so long to complete. Have posted account specific information for you on the »Windstream Direct forum.

Someone suggested that I continue to post the condition of my DSL 3mbps subscription service with Windstream... at approximately 8:30PM on a Saturday night.

I was offered the consolation of a $10/month discount for the poor quality of my DSL 3mbps ($59/month "for life" bundled... that adds up to $83/month... go figure). this discount is only for 6 months... I'm not optimistic that any solution is forthcoming to improve the 3mbps subscription... sigh

This test result is approximately an hour later... 9:30PM CST...
again, this is a 3mbps subscription "bundled" plan (can actually hit that 'speed' in the early morning hours...)

Yeah, alot of us are having the same problem.
I have the 3mb plan too.

They told me the estimated time (this time) is march something.
Then again...it's been screwed since sometime last year.

hullo.

it seems of late (following some brief period of general improvement) that Windstream DSL subscription (3mbps) just doesn't provide the speed advertised/purchased... not sure if this "temporary" but all these "temporary" dips/hits/drops in performance run together.

most of today "best" download speeds were less than 0.5mbps; I post this for "the record" at approx. 7:30PM CST...

Pablo

odd, my post from last night seems to have evaporated...
anyway, on 2/24/12 (friday) at approx 8:30 PM CST
i got download speeds of about 0.2mbps (on a 3mbps subscription account).
I thought things were some better tonight, so here is the result:
