Re: [Network] speed drop: 3mbps to 0.3mbps most evenings= most e

hopefully this demonstrates that the equipment (mine, Windstream's) does work... at times when not overtaxed.
this is result at approximately 8 AM CDT on a Saturday morning.

the 3mbps subscription can & does deliver 3mbps speeds. It's at night or other times of increased use that speeds deteriorate. My assessment is that the "trunk" line is thus oversubscribed. Windstream has explained there is a problem, but hasn't said it's due to over subscription...
hopefully this improves in the future?

have discovered that this "thread" of my "adventures in DSL w/ Windstream" has not disappeared post "melt down & resurrection" DSLReports.com...
so, I'll continue adding to it... a catalog of poor DSL speeds, despite being sold a 3mbps subscription / DSL "upgrade"
JUST IN CASE THERE IS EVER A CLASS ACTION SUIT.... hopefully, others are also documenting their frustration (poor network performance)-- just in case.

sigh....
it seems that i should have saved the $70 + or so i spend monthly for the bundled home phone & DSL & invested in pigeons... or seriously consider satellite (but the onerous "limits" of monthly downloads is about 2 or 3 GB...)...
because this is "typical" evening speeds of 3mbps subscription plan with WINDSTREAM... why did they even sell this plan to me if this is what they can deliver? The "BEST BET" estimate I've gotten for "improvement"... "next year" NEXT YEAR (WOW)...
these results are from approximately 9 PM CDT on THUR MAY 24, 2012.

serious question... is 0.14mbps "faster" than "dial up"?

Pablo

these results are from early A.M. (before everyone else is up & online, I guess) to demo that my equipment is working & that WINDSTREAM is capable of delivering 3mbps subscription...
an aside: following complaint to FCC, it appears that my "problem" may receive more timely attention?

I feel your pain man. I've been going through this same issue for nearly two years now, and no fix. I've filed complaints with the BBB, and nothing came of it short of "They said they had an ETA on the fix, that's good enough for us".

The next thing to do is get the AG involved. Aaron, Larissa, while I HIGHLY appreciate the hard work and help that you guys are offering here, sadly it's just not enough. There's a ton of us who are having these problems. I've been talking to many, many individuals in my area and many are having the same issues.

I'm going to start a new thread, and I want everyone to post speedtests between the hours of 8pm and 12am, if that's possible. More voices means that maybe we can get the ball rolling faster.

We're in the same boat, near Fordyce, AR. We've been seeing the same crappy speeds intermittently in the evening, with poor latency all the time for the last year. The tech who came out today to look at our lines lives down the street and said he's got the same issues. He said flat out that the dslam is so oversold that it can't handle the number of users. He also said that if Windstream bothered to hook up to the fiber that runs nearby instead of using copper T1 lines at the collector it would solve our issues. Apparently it's been "in the works" for a couple of years now, with no date in sight for when it may happen.

We're giving Windstream's customer service a shot to resolve this before trying executive customer service, and then whatever governmental agencies that will listen.

Good luck to you in your quest. So far we've been unsuccessful at breaching the "Green Wall of Silence" to get at anyone with any authority to actually resolve issues like this.

continuing to document network performance "peak" vs. "non-peak" times. Windstream has suggested to the FCC that in answer to my complaint that an individual's computer, OS, software, downloads, etc. may have an effect upon high speed internet results...
This assessment doesn't reflect the reality of decent speeds on this network during non-peak times vs peak times.
I hope that I can share these results & other topics in this forum in my response.
these results (below) are for a 3mbps subscription-

performance on 3mbps subscription ... approx 7 PM CDT; Fri 7/13/12
southern Montgomery Co. -- where there is fiber optic cable to the "OPM" (connection box where "DSLAMs" are located)... BUT the fiber optic is not connected & I've been told there is no plan to connect it. (why?)

(roughly 1/30th of the 3mbps subscription purchased). This happens most evenings. Thus, the basis of my complaint with the FCC. I've not been informed when or if an improvement of the service can be anticipated.
All I know to do is to continue to log these results, ask for a steeper discount (only $10/ month), suggest that WINDSTREAM make an effort to improve the product they sold & continue to sell-- "high speed internet connection" via DSL.
maybe the FCC will encourage them to redouble their effort?

(I'm continuing to post/log the dismal performance of this Windstream DSL "HSIC" ... not sure why, but just to support my complaint to the FCC that Windstream knew or should have known that they oversold this area-- e.g. they are not able to provide sufficient bandwidth to all the subscribers they enrolled in this one area. Unfortunately, they have no plans to improve the situation. This is another matter before the FCC-- that they have no plan to make any changes in this area & are content to leave the situation as is. note that "0.32mbps download" is only 1/10 of the paid for subscription. Sometimes it gets down to "0.05 mbps-- which is about 1/50th the paid for DSL "high speed internet connection" (HSIC) (?an oxymoron?).

Maybe I'm mistaken. maybe WINDSTREAM does have plans to improve the "HSIC" status of this areas "DSLAM"... they've not communicated it. This is July 2012-- this has been going on for over a year. OK, let's just say since JAN 2012-- when I started logging this situation in earnest, here. WHEN IT IS FIXED I WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY SO & if soon, I'll even add "Kudos" or "at-a-boy, WS..." we'll see if/when they get an "at-a-boy"...

An aside, Windstream is at risk of losing a lot of their customer base if/when the technology develops to loose the limits of bandwidth with satellite &/or cell phone connection- or the "HSIC" via "power lines" comes online...
just saying.
OK, end of rant.

Pablo

So, pattern continues: decent (at/near paid for 3mbps subscription speed) MORNINGS ONLY-- not a problem w/ equipment, internet, etc. as suggested by WINDSTREAM in their response to my FCC complaint ... while much diminished performance typically every evening after 7 or 8 PM (sometimes sooner).
