how to setup at&t 2wire without CD installation disc

I recently bought an at&t 2wire 2701HG-B 4 port Ethernet modem/wifi router from ebay.

the description was new, & when I got the box, it looked sealed, I opened it & it looked like everything was there except the installation cd. all the other items seemed to be in sealed new bags.

I will be hooking it up to a 2004 dell pc with windows xp home service pack 2.

I will also be using it with ehernet to a 2010 macbook pro with snowleopard 10.6.8. in another room

in addtion, family will be using an amazon kindle via wifi.

So i am not sure this modem/router is actually new or whether it was reboxed as new, but someone had used it.

right now we have at&t DSL service with a speedstream 5100b modem.

we will replace the modem with the 2wire, since it is a 3 in one device.

so if it turns out that this modem was used, or installed on a previous computer with the install disc, can or how do I set it up on the dell pc?

First, you need to log-in to the old modem and copy your settings (VPI, VCI, Username, Password). Connect the new modem and plug the Dell into one of the LAN ports. Open up a command prompt and use the ipconfig command to find the gateway address. Use that address to log-in to the new modem and enter the relevant settings. You should be up and running in no time.

You should not need the CD:

The manual should cover installation and I don't see it mentioning a CD.

very simple...you need to take note though that AT&T has a separate password for email and "network" which you use to setup the modem to access AT&T's network.

connect dsl modem to phone jack, turn it on, make sure it synchs...connect pc to ethernet port [1-4, you choose].

fire up IE, type in 192.168.1.254, click enter....it should bring up a screen to let you type in your username [email address] and password [network password]. if you don't have or forgot the network password, call AT&T and get them to give you one.

IF you see and feel it was used in another account before, unplug the modem, press that reset button [don't let go yet], plug power, count to 35, then let go of the reset button.

IMO, you'd be better off with a 3347 than a 2Wire 2701. I wouldn't trade my 3347 for a truckload of 2701.

lastly, your question should be posted in this forum...»AT&T Southeast

What are VPI, VCI,? & where do I look for those?

well, if the 2wire does not work, how would I go back to my wired setup? I have a wired setup now, with a speedstream 5100b modem, a trendnet ethernet switch, hooked with cat 5e ethernet wires to a dell pc, & cat5e ethernet wires to a macbook pro in another room with a static IP address.

No need to look for these as you are using a n att supported modem.

Nothing to change, only replace the 5100b.

Look fora 3347-02-1006, 1006L, or a 1022, the latter being the latest.
