Yes and no, it depends on how the shows being recorded are flagged. When CableCard first hit Microsoft Media Center every recording made via CableCard was encrypted (DRMed) regardless of how they were flagged. This is no longer the case but you can bet any premium channel (HBO-HD, Showtime-HD, Stars-HD and so on) will be restricted and many non-premium channels as well.

Restricted recordings are tied to the system that made the recordings so if it should fail for any reason you risk losing access to your entire recorded library or at least part of it.

I’ll also point out that many of the extenders made in the past are no longer functional with the latest version of Media Center. Microsoft changed the proprietary file format and added support for other media types (AVCHD / H.264). While I have an Xbox 360 and have tested it as an extender, I didn’t much like the experience or rather didn’t prefer it. Extenders, IMO are largely in existence to deal with the restrictive nature of some recordings,….a gilded cage is still a cage.

I can access these DRM free recordings from anywhere in the house and out of the house if I so choose. I cant do that with cablecard, although I do have a cablecard unit for testing. The Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 does dualcable card recordings but I havent set it up yet,..

I've started to just set my DVR to record any 1st runs of shows I like and to keep all till full (I have a 2TB esata drive on it and I'm not even to 50% after recording all of blizzcon and weeks of shows since)

so then when the weekend comes I have a few hours of shows to watch

Same here, I can’t really be bothered anymore to try and keep track of when the show is actively on the air with new episodes or when they are just screwing the fans.

I use two independent Microsoft Windows 7 Media Center systems and they record all the shows I (and the family) watch. Many series recordings are set to automatically upload to my local Windows Home Server which has something like ~14TB of storage. I don’t archive Fringe though. Once I watch it I tend to watch a block of them and erase each episode after watching.

Same, I think they're leading to that.

That episode showed us that the observers will take over (which seems to me to be the next thing to encounter in the show)

however it might just be one possible future just like the war torn one peter saw.

it was Season 3 episode 22...The Day We Died....the finale where Peter uses the machine...from the episode recap....

Peter is at home when the MPs bring Walter to him. He explains that Peter needs to go back and change history, with Olivia as their failsafe. Walter has spent the last 15 years trying to figure out where the pieces came from, and has finally realized that he sent them millions of years into the past through the Central Park wormhole. Peter suggests that they never send the pieces back, but Walter warns that he can't alter history. He can't make a difference choice, but Peter can make a different choice if Walter can bring his consciousness from 2011 into the present of 2026 to see what will happen if he makes the wrong choice. Walter warns that they have no idea what the cost might be, but it can't be worse than losing Olivia. Peter agrees and asks what he needs to do.

So it doesn't directly say that Walter created the machine but he put the pieces into the past.

They wrote it this way because the next season of episodes was in doubt for so long... do they wrap it up with Bell's Earth reboot or continue by dealing with the Observer invasion. Had they cancelled next season, we would have never seen that future Observer take over mission - it's probably the story arch the writers had to come up with to coax Fox into green lighting another season - it was also a cheap episode to make as it had few special effects or minutes with the stars on screen.

What I am most curious to see is what they will do with the Earth Bridge machine room now that Bell is no longer a threat, and how the other Earth influences the Observer invasion because remember it was a noble Observer saving Peter (the key to the machine working and them bridging to the other Earth) that the other selfish Observers didn't want to see happen, so it stands to reason that other Earth may be key to repelling the Observer invasion scheme, or perhaps repairing the Observer's future so the Observers need not invade the past in the first place. Bell's scheme never required the Machine to work - he and his lackys were able to travel between Earths using his own portal and/or Bell.

~~We still don't know who made the machine, why, and what was it's original design purpose - I hope we'll learn that before they run out of episodes.~~

I didn't realize how grumpy Walter had been until I saw him in the last episode. It's about time things start to get back to "normal" on Fringe.

Also, I like the idea of going back to an old case where things happened the same as in the other universe (at first), and then something small changes causing the story to unfold totally differently.
They should do this kind of stuff some more, with Olivia and Peter remembering details from working the "same" case previously.

had to be rectified by saving peter from drowning
in the other universe. if the observer really was
from the future, he could have just told bishop,
"oh, i saw your drug turn blue for a moment, so
i guess you got it right - i'll be on my way now."
and this whole mess could have been averted.

The Observers are humans from the future of a possible timeline, doesn't mean they are a define outcome.

he interupted Walternant, causing him to miss seeing he had the cure (thus causing Walter to cross over to save alt-peter) which caused the cracks in space-time and the need for alt-peter to use the machine to repair space time, thus causing alt-peter to remove himself from existance.

he saved alt-peter (or didn't in the current time line)

he didn't erase peter like he was ordered to

I think he might be the one that told olivia that she had to die

its all november's fault

now if we can get some info on that person from a season or so ago that Olivia said was going to kill her.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked the X-Files but one of the things I didn’t like about the X-Files is that I got the feeling that they never really tried to explain anything. I would hate for Fringe to go the same route. They can do something as simple as to explain who the observers are.
