[DIRECTV] When will slow response get fixed?

I get so tired of when you change channels and it just sits there for several seconds. When will DTV get a new firmware update to fix this problem? No problem on the SD receivers but on my HD receivers, it is very slow sometimes.

Do you have Native On? That will cause a delay with the HD as it has to change resolutions everytime

Native is turned off.

A new menu/guide is in the last stages of testing for all HD units - it's even been 'announced' on the DTV site:

I think that "lightning fast" might well be pushing reality a bit, but from what I've heard, it's definitely an improvement.

Bring it on. When will they push it out to everyone? I hope it is some improvement to the sluggish one they have now.

Also, go to channel 1 and press red, red, blue, blue, yellow, green. It will clear up the NVRAM/FLASH and speed it up a bit. Also turn-off scrolling.

OK, did that, it seems to help some. Thanks.

Are you using a DVR or just an HD unit? The HD units are on par speed with the SD units but there will always be a delay with the DVR's as they have to start/stop buffering when you change channels. Channel surfing will be slower than guide changing

If you're awake between 11p and 2a tonight, you can download it yourself.

Reboot your receiver and as soon as the lights come back on press 0-2-4-6-8 on your remote. That'll force it to download the "beta" code. If it doesn't start downloading, unplug it and start over.

Keep in mind it is beta code and it could break your machine. Also, the helpdesk folk don't know much about this code so calling them is next to useless.

If you choose to do so, give it 24 hours to sort itself out and you'll be in speed-heaven-bliss. Well, maybe not that good. But it is much faster and mo-purdeee-ur.

Keep in mind a number of things have to happen too.

Its not like just flicking through analog channels.

Often a lot of switching has to go on..... switch from horiz to vertical polarity....plus more than 2 receivers other switches.... then has to buffer a couple sec of frames to get a head start and insure smooth flow, etc. It will never be instantaneous.

Though for sure some are slower than others. On my Dish SD DVR receiver averages about 2 sec. HD takes a little longer since there is so much more data to head start buffer more like 3-4 sec from both DISH and DTV receivers I've seen.

Even flicking through open digital cable, via TV tuner is far from instant.

I got the new interface a few weeks ago (it downloaded during the night).

For the guide and stuff it is much faster than the old interface. However, flipping to HD shows, it is just the same as the old interface. I still see about a 3 - 4 second "delay" before the new show starts.

problem with that is --you have a test version (from a couple of weeks ago) They are for testers that test the loads and send error report codes back to D* so that software bugs can be fixed before a software load or feature is ready National release.

They are of NO use to any user that is not going to be sending info back and then upon having any bug issue call D* and no one will be able to support your issue.
Bad things can happen with beta loads
1.Losing all your saved recording
2.Turning your receiver into a brick (complete fail)
3. receiver will reboot often
4.you may not be able to return a receiver to a National release
these are just a few thing that has and can happen if you choose to be foolish.

Foolish ?
I had no choice, it was automatically download; I did not ask for it. D* never sent me anything telling me that I was a Guinea pig.

I have one of each. The DVR seems to be just slightly slower, like you said.

There's no secret club for testers to report back results of using early software releases. Both DBSTalk and Satelliteguys have forums that are monitored by Directv for results.

While bad things can happen using early release software, the chances of it happening are low for most releases. Certainly, if you have little Johnny's first parade march recorded from a news source you may want to give it a second thought.

In the 1+ year of downloading early release software, I've never read about or personally seen a STB do any of the items you list above.

My only gripe with the program is the fact that they've not fixed the cripeled piece of crap MediaShare code.

No Secret club-anyone can join Then you will find out the rules and how to report back. The Trouble reports are sent back to D* from the receivers through the menu of the receivers.

The report codes are generated and then posted on the said internet sites , which D* looks at for more information (ie) how and what is connected and compared to the trouble file.

We are starting to see it pushed on the customer level here as well... Charlotte, NC is slated for 12/13/11

On new installs or upgrades, when we are forcing the first download (so that VOD works properly) we are starting to see the new software on all but the HR-34's here...

The slow roll out national release version should be 0x575. It's in hexadecimal... anything higher than that is considered a "cutting edge" test build.

See the firmware tracker:

Looks like from the history that the slow roll out occurs between 3 and 4 AM PST.

If you would like to know more about it, please feel free to visit the various DirecTV cutting edge forums on DBSTalk or Satelliteguys.us

I forced a download of the newest firmware for my HR21-200 last night between 11:00pm & 2:30am as outlined at the forum on DBSTalk.com.

What an amazing difference! This new firmware breathes new life into my aging HR21-200.

The GUI is much more pleasing to look at and the change speed in the guide and menus are indeed lightning fast compared to the previous firmware.
