 | Why unlock a Vonage VDV21-VD I just cancelled my vonage service and was looking at whether there was any uses for the box or if it was just garbage, when I found various posting about unlocking them. Is this just to use it as a router only or could you then use it with skype? |

 | I don't think you will ever be able to use it with skype. You have to buy a new one from the market. Remember if you sign up with another provider, he would also send an adapter for free. That free adapter would be a plug and play device. Meanwhile, it would be very difficult to configure vonage adapter with another provider (even if you get its administrative access) |

Is this just to use it as a router only or could you then use it with skype? The VDV21 was manufactured for Vonage only and although it can be unlocked (I've done it with many units) it's pretty hard to program to anothe VoIP provider because there are no web pages for configuring the SIP settings. One would have to build a configuration file, put it on a web or tftp server and then tell the adapter to read its configuration from that URL. Furthermore, no voip adapters compatible with Vonage would work with Skype. Skype chose to use a proprietary protocol instead of the widely adopted SIP protocol used by most of the other VoIP providers. That also means that if you buy a phone or ATA for Skype and later on want to switch to another VoIP provider, your Skype ATA would be useless. -- Providers: voip.ms, freephoneline, smartcall.ro through asterisk. Hardware: Vonage VDV21, Moto VT2x42, Linksys SPA series, Grandstream HT series, Panasonic KX-TGP5x0 »www.voipfan.net |
