Which modem / router combo for ADSL+ ?

Hi, forum
Been reading for a while and decided to ask a clarification question.

Got ATT Dsl 6.0 but only get 4.5 at best on Speedstream 5100b with 5 lights.

I'd like to upgrade to a newer ADSL+ supporting modem and router combo and would like to know what offers are out there. Wireless is not required.

The modem I have in mind is the Netopia 3346N-002, are there better options out there since this one looks to have latest firmware since '07.

Thanks, Andy

You can't get ADSL2+ unless/until AT&T converts your DSLAM to ADSL2+. They are gradually converting all CO DSLAMs to ADSL2+ but haven't released a schedule. At the time of conversion, they would tell you that you either have to buy a new modem from their ADSL2+ modem offerings and choose a new speed plan, or quit your service with them.

If you wish faster speeds than 4.5, please post some modem stats so we can diagnose your speed problem.

i moved from a FTTN U-Verse street to an IP DSLAM street (adsl2+) and got 2 modems from them- LoL. the 2wire modem plus the new Mot. Both work for the new speeds. But to find out just check online to see what your house gets or call them. They'll tell them your speeds and what type of technology it is. They told me that generally if U-Verse TV and Voice are NOT available you are on an IP DSLAM which is ADSL2+

I've checked the U-Verse website and only Internet is available at this phone number, up to 12mbps.

Managed to buy a Netopia 3346N-002 which is listed as 3346N-VGx with firmware 7.5.1r2.
DSL Modulation is listed as DMT

I'm not an expert with logs, I hope these are ok, the interface is a little different than my previous modem.

Datapump Version: DSP 4.2.1.0, HAL 4.2.1.0
Downstream Upstream
---------- ----------
SNR Margin: 9.00 15.00 dB
Line Attenuation: 31.50 19.00 dB
Output Power: 19.69 11.88 dB
Errored Seconds: 0 0
Loss of Signal: 0 0
Loss of Frame: 0 0
CRC Errors: 3 5
Data Rate: 4480 768

Speeds are about the same if not identical to previous modem. Is there any way to change the DSL Modulation on the Netopia?

Forgot to mention, when the 5100b was plugged in all the time it got 6008kb connections all the time, now that it's on a power surge that shuts all peripherals off when the pc is off, the speeds are 4500kbps. Coincidence?

Appreciate the help!

There is something strange about those stats. Your DL line attenuation indicates the line should easily handle 6008 speeds. The output power is maxed out indicating the modem is trying to reach faster speeds.

Have you checked that all your microfilters are installed correctly? It's also possible that there might be a bad one. The phone line isn't running through a surge protector is it?

You should put the 5100b back on the line to run and post results from this test: »SBC DSL FAQ »How can I check for the maximum attainable sync speeds with a 5100b/4100 modem?. There may be a big chunk of missing frequencies in your DMT chart from noise from the surge protector.

Also please check the hybrid numbers that it reports: »SBC DSL FAQ »What do the hybrid numbers mean and what do they tell you about your line?

Last firmware is for 3346n is nta760r4.bin
Dsl options are set via telnet
3346n typically costs $15.

The stats indicate a wiring or power interference problem.

I gave the 5100 modem to somebody and can't run the indicated test on it, sorry, d_l!

In the meantime I've upgraded to UVerse since the DSL price for the Elite/6.0 went back to $40 and they promised better speeds with fiber.

The newer modem is a Motorola NVG510, fw 9.0.6h0d48.

It displays soo many specs, I hope I'm listing the vital ones in order to further elaborate this lack of speed.

Downstream Sync Rate (kbps) 4779
Upstream Sync Rate (kbps) 765
Modulation ADSL2+
Data Path Fast

As you can see, I still don't get near the 6008 I always saw before the 5100 worked alright, who knows, maybe they've changed something in the near connectivity box.

Downstream and Upstream Statistics
Downstream Upstream
SN Margin (dB) 5.8 18.3
Line Attenuation (dB) 32.0 19.6
Output Power(dBm) 18.5 8.1
Errored Seconds 1885 0
Loss of Signal 0 0
Loss of Frame 0 0
FEC Errors 0 0
CRC Errors 6497 0

Line connects straight to the wall, it doesn't share a phone. I've tried another phone jack as well and still get the same results.

What I do like about this modem is the fact that if I download something, it downloads at max speed even if 4.2 or 4.7. I can see from DUMeter's graph that it's a full continuous bar vs up and downs and interruptions with previous Netopia and 5100 after the loss of speed from 6008's.
Another thing I like is the better power management, it consumes about 4 watt less than the Netopia

Thanks!!

I think you have exactly the same problems, whatever they are, on ADSL2+ as you did on ADSL. It seems that AT&T overpromised U-Verse broadband and now they are underperforming.

The post-Speedstream modems have reduced diagnostics capability. Sorry that I can't be of further help. So you should register here (it's free) and post your problem in AT&T Direct: »AT&T Direct where an AT&T tech can take a look at it. Good luck.
