PSU assistance

Excuse me if this is a noobish question; just want to verify before I send this puppy back.

Alrighty. so I bought a re-certified PSU from OCZ. This is the one:

Got it in the mail a few days ago. Joy. I try to install it today and get everything plugged up just fine, with one exception: the video card.

Now...I'm fairly sure that the video card power supply connectors are all the same. If I buy a PCI-E card, no matter the brand, they're going to have the same power connector.

On my video card, which is Asus' model of THIS card:

There are TWO power "sockets" right next to each other, for a total of 12 holes. On my old PSU, I had two separate, identical cords coming from my PSU, one going into each.

On my NEW PSU, I DO have "2 x 6-pin PCI-E" cords. The one labelled "PCI-E1" fits in just fine. But the one that is unlabelled, but looks identical, has one pin that's different. Instead of the bottom middle pin being rounded, it's square. so obviously, it doesn't fir into my video card.

Shew, that was long.

So..uh...return it?

On a side note, the little safety clip on PCI-E1 is broken off, so I've half a mind to RMA it regardless.

It should be rmaed over the clip, it will not stay tight, and if the connection becomes crappy (works lose), you may melt stuff.

Now that being said... I am shocked at how bad that psu is, a 850 with only 2 GPU plugs? WHAT? and only 6 pins?

Nothing should be keyed different, you should have 2 of the same pcie power plugs... if not, send her back.

Also 850 is way too large for any system with that old of a vid card in it.

Anyways it was not new... and likely was the reason for the return in the first place... wrong plug.

Yeah, I only paid 35 bucks for it, so I suppose you get what you pay for.

Thank you for your help!

I'd RMA. In saying that. I've always loved my OCZ PSU's all these years. But a refurb is a refurb.

The gamexstream 850 should have 4 pic-e power connectors. 2 of them are 6 pin and 2 are 6+2 pin breakaway types which can fit in either a 6 pin connector or an 8 pin. It sounds like you may be confusing the 2 or not handling the breakaway on the 6+2 pin correctly or may be trying to plug one of the 6+2 in using the wrong 6 pins of the 8 pin. You should be able to detach the additional 2 pins from the 6 pin and then plug it in properly.

At any rate if one of the 3 remaining pci-e should work for you.

goodcatch

@optonline.net

I must say good catch, I never looked at the specs... just the picture they put. I was kinda shocked it only had 2 pci-e's

2 X 6-pin PCI-E
2 X 6+2-pin PCI-E

I would still rma, if the OP ever wanted to use that other plug it be bad news.

Not to mention that it ONLY has TWO PCI-E connector's.

I've gone through each one of the cords, one by one. It's supposed to have four; it only has two. One of them has the wrong "head" attached.

...nice.

In the link you provided, it clearly shows right there that this power supply only has two 6pin PCI-e power cords. Both of those cords should be identical and interchangeable on the card.

If you think you are going to SLI/Crossfire in the future, making sure the PSU you choose has 4 of these is a good thing to keep in mind.

And by the way, don't buy a PSU based on the wildly high wattage they claim. Save up the $75-$100 and get a good 500W. Trust me, PSUs are the one thing you should never skimp on.

@optonline.net

First off way to not read the thread.

Connectors:
1 X 20+4-pin ATX
1 X 4+4-pin CPU
2 X 6-pin PCI-E
2 X 6+2-pin PCI-E
6 X Peripheral
2 X Floppy
6 X SATA

I already said to the other anom poster nice catch on the SPECS...

Also, since when do you SAVE money going from a crap psu to a good one. Never happens a 800watt POS is like, still cheaper than a GOOD 500watter.

But ya I will say never skimp on the psu!
