Re: [Availability] 10 years later, still no DSL from AT&T availa

I understand the "gotta make a bundle" mentality of corporations, but here is a prime example of waste at its best. AT&T installed a new DSLAM about 3 miles from here (not in my neighborhood, but the next one), its intact complete with the power meter, but to this date, DSL is not available to the residents who will feed off this "really expensive" paperweight. Its the prime example of the gap between planning and engineering. Most planning was done 10 years ago before UVERSE was thought out and DSL was the thing. Now they have decided that DSL is old news and UVERSE is the thing, way before they are able to offer it in a comparative market to the DSL service areas. Can we say One Step Forward and Two Steps Back. You are correct about the Wal-Mart mentality though. We all complain till something is cheap, then complain again because it isn't 50 cents cheaper and will sell out just about any provider of any service to save. Now on the other side of that a business says "Okay, if 9.95 sells, then 10.95 will too." I understand both sides of that. People have to save money, but if they aren't willing to make the investment in a company, then the company takes the same stance about them. On the flipside a company needs to understand that there is a line limit to what people will pay for goods and services. Do we do it do ourselves? Probably, Most likely, Yep!.....I went to work in an era where Levi's were still made here (I worked in the factory)...but I look back at my resume over 23 years and of all the places I have worked only a few are still in business cause they were priced out of the market.

Why does profit need to figure into every decision? Why not provide DSL service to rural areas because it is the right thing to do?

Really when was the last time you worked your job fo nothing so they could hire a new person.

If you get it will you pay for your neighbor's BB too because someone just should?

Oh that only works on the receiving end hunh?

Thanks Hayward, finally somebody sees my point. I read a couple Ayn Rand books last year and this was one of the main issues. Corporations have no moral responsibility to society to make it a better place. They might give you some lip service but thats all it is. Their responsibility is to the stockholders. Period. Sorry. I know it sucks.

Eventually, the internet is going to have to be regulated at a public utility. Much like electricity.

And it cannot happen fast enough in my opinion. I have lived at my location for 30 years. Cable, natural gas, municipal water, and faster DSL are all less than 1 mile from my house. I have called my state reps to try to get government mandated coverage for all these but NG, but no luck.

I get my electricity from one power company, with no option to buy from another at a cheaper price. However, I get the same alternating current, 120/240 volt 60Hz electricity at my house that every other American does. The electric grid is standardized at those parameters. The decision was made years ago to accept those standards, regardless of whether other people considered it fair, and regardless of whether anyone could improve the system. In my opinion Internet service/speeds should be no different. One company providing me the service, at the one speed for all, whatever it takes to accomplish this.

The power companies are doing quite well, and I own stock in them and am happy with the performance. Additions need at a power company to meet increased demand? Costs are passed on to customers.

Again, in my opinion,Internet service and electricity are the same, both necessities. Sure I could live without either or both, but I sure wouldn’t like it.
