| [DIRECTV] Temporary Service Location Change Does DirecTV offer a service where they allow you to temporarily change your service location for lets say 30 days? I know about the movers connection but this is only a short term change.
We will be moving into a house that had DirecTV service a while ago while we do some work on it. The project is planned for a 30 day window, then we will be returning to our full time home and will be changing location back to there.
Are there any magic words that I need to use to get this service, if it exists. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| I know they offer a seasonal disco/reco but that would not do you any good...
Best I can offer is that if the temporary house already had DirecTV and the dish is still wired in (as long as your are in pretty much the same geographic region), you could simply take your receiver over to there and hook it up and not do a thing to your account. The only issues here would be if you have HD and the temp house didn't, or if the dish on the temp home is out of alignment or anything.
We have guys in the oil field who move all over the US and they simply have their bill auto-deducted out of their credit cards and paperless billing. They don't get their local channels for where they currently are, but if that were even an issue for your situation, it's only temporary... -- Words of advice for today... | Thanks. The house did have DirecTV a while back but the dish is out of alignment and I can NOT gt it back.
I peak can 101 and 99 and then 103ca / cb is down to 0 . I peak 103 ca and loose 103CB and 99
101 max is 90 signal strength and the others are 20-60 at best.. No trees in the way for miles.
I have replaced the LNB, re-squared the mast, replaced the Sat coax, etc. Checked the tilt on the dish at 62*, etc. etc -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| reply to pende_tim At the risk of sounding stupid, the dish type and LNB type are the same between the two houses? Also any multiswitches at one and not the other?
If you replaced the LNB, coax, and re-squared everything, and the receiver works fine in one location and not the other... Then there is something missing or off. -- Words of advice for today... "Be Happy, Drink Coffee, Drive Safe!" |

| both are SWM3 HD sets. And yes the receiver works in one house but very weak in other. I have removed the splitter and used the power inserter to power just 1 receiver. Measured the voltage from the power inserter and it was just what the nameplate said it should be.
I did take the reflector off in the poor performing house when Irene blew through, but it is back on properly as far as I can tell. The 4 carriage bolts make it pretty self aligning. Bolts are snug but not over tight.
Have you ever heard of a reflector warping? That is almost what it seems like to me. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| reply to pende_tim I have had reflectors warp... it's rare and usually there is something else prior that is actually causing the issue, but it sounds like you have ruled out most everything else... Receiver is good, you replaced coax feed, replaced LNB, squared and leveled mast, peaked ODU, hooked up PI direct (as test)...
I haven't seen a warped reflector in a while, as most guys here do NOT pre-build their dishes anymore but I have seem them. -- Words of advice for today... "Be Happy, Drink Coffee, Drive Safe!" |

| reply to pende_tim Well, I called DirecTV today and ask about a temporary change of service address for 3-4 weeks.
Turns out this is no big deal. The person I spoke with asked me the new address, recognized there was an install there before, and changed the service address to that location.
I did confirm with him that this was not a "move" and it would not extend my contract.
We will see how it goes in the end. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| reply to pende_tim On a SMW3, you only peak the 101. After setting the tilt to the specified location based on what your receiver or meter tell you to do.
Here are some videos to get you started....

| Thanks, I did peak 101 using I used the counting turns/signal strength method on 101 and lost 103ca and 103cb. By lost: I mean the signal strength was 0 on all the transponders on 103 ca/cb. When worked on 103 ca best I could do was 55-60 with some transponders in the 30-40 range. Doing this lowered 101 down to 50-70 range and 99 went to 0. And yes the tilt is set to 62*
This was not just a one shot attempt. I tried a while one day, gave it a rest, tried again next day, lather, rinse, repeat. There is definitely something really wrong here. -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

| Mast is plumb. That was my first thought based on not being able to get peak on 99 and 103 with the same adjustments. I took off dish and re-plumbed mast, then re aligned as best as I could. That is why I think the reflector may be warped. Even working with 101, the best I can see is about a 90 signal strength, I know this should be 100 on some transponders.
Line of sight is excellent; it will be 50 years before the trees get high enough to block signal.
Once I get settled in, I will call for a service visit. Fortunately, I enrolled in the protection plan a while back and they have this location on file as a successful install from last year.

I haven't seen a warped reflector in a while, as most guys here do NOT pre-build their dishes anymore but I have seem them. My suspicion was correct: the DirecTV tech just left and he diagnosed the reflector was warped. Replaced the reflector and mow I have 93+ on all satellites/transponders. This is better than the day it was new. Tim -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |
