Re: Milestone said by dave:Instrumentation is supposed to, you know, tell you stuff in a straightforward manner. Its job is not to be "interesting". That is certain better designed than the crap Honda came up with later. in that link is where I find something the most interesting. why do so many automatics have a Tach and yet most cars with the manual trim do not get the tach? other than the fact most people driving with manual transmissions on purpose can likely tell when their car is not running right just by feel.

[att=1] actually I think Cadillac experimented with a HUD in some cars and it never really sold too well.
Though I did see a thing once on Modern Marvels I think it was where there is some county with large fog issues so the police cars have Radar and a HUD and the cops get a sort of loose radar image projected on the window with range to any obstructions. |

My main complaint is around that area. The high-level instrument cluster may be a matter of taste. However, once they removed the speedo from the main cluster, they left the main cluster the same size as it was before, expanded the size of the tach (a secondary instrument in most cases, even for manual transmissions where it's actually useful) to fill up the space, and then used all that "wow, ain't I l33t?" blue lighting.
Not to mention the visual and semantic discord between having a digital speedo and an analogue tach.
FWIW, that dashboard caused me to buy a BMW. Seriously, sort of. I was the happy owner of a 1996 Civic, and would probably have bought a 2010 model without thinking much about it. But the interior was just offensive. My search for not-completely-crass design took me a little further upmarket each week of looking. |

 | reply to Lurch77 My car has a temperature gauge. It isn't shown in photo. |

| Digital oil pressure gauge displays on non-performance cars are not granulated...meaning they may simply display a middle position for oil pressure being present but don't show the actual PSI that a proper analog gauge would. Because of that the middle range information being provided is not that useful to diagnose worn engine parts. |

Lurch77Premium join:2001-11-22 Oconto, WI kudos:4 | reply to Kearnstd My 2001 Grand Cherokee has a true oil pressure gage, as well as battery voltage and water temp. My 2001 Chevy Express work van has these as well. My wife's 2003 Caravan only has water temp, the rest are idiot lights. And even the water temp just says Cold and Hot with graduated marks between them, no actual temp shown. So I agree it must be a truck thing. Jeep, although going upscale with some of their latest offerings, have a history of being utilitarian, so it makes sense to offer a full gage set. As it does on a 3/4 cargo van. |

I actually used that once to determine my alternator had gone bad on my pickup. it started at 12v and kept going down, And I knew at least on my S10 it was always around 14v when functioning normally. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

It makes it easier to monitor my speed and gas level without having to look too far down or look around the steering wheel. The tach is kind of big and dumb but it doesn't really bother me. |
