 | [MA] Another reason why I hate MA So, I am ATTEMPTING to enroll into college for dietetics & nutrition. Of all the colleges around me, none of them off an approved ADA Dietetic program that are shorter than 1 hour drive (not including traffic drive time) which is impossible to do with my work hours through the week and if I didn't work, would not be able to afford the gas to be driving to classes 4-5 days a week.
After some back and forth researching, finally find an approved ADA program offered 100% online through the University of Alabama. I would only need 3 classes to complete as prerequisites which I was able to find an online college which Uof A approved and verified that the classes would transfer to their Dietetic program.
Well, after attempting to apply at secondary college, Rio Salado in AZ, come to find out the so wonderful state of MA does not authorize distance education from the state of Arizona and many other states to anyone living in MA. Even if I am not a RESIDENT of MA (I am here with husband on military orders)
I don't understand how a state can dictate how one receives their education when I am using MY money to pay for it! I hate you the state of MA!!!

 | Is the issue that the State of Massachusetts does not authorize distance education from the state of Arizona or that Rio Solado has not applied for authorization or has not met the State requirements?
I can understand the need for accreditation to prevent worthless degrees from diploma mills. I can also appreciate the overreach of some bureaucratic State organizations. Overreach and Massachusetts can be synonymous.
I applaud your effort. Good luck in finding a suitable program. |
|
 | It is because MA hasn't authorized distance education from Rio Salado and a numerous other amounts of colleges in Arizona (and other states) such as Scottsdale Community College, Glendale Community College, Mesa Community College, South Mountain Community College, Mesa Community College and others. RS is not a diploma mill by any means. I have contacted the Mass. Board of Higher Education to try to figure out what the deal is. I am not a resident of this state and don't want MA determining what colleges I can and can't go to when they are not paying for my education. Hopefully this mess will be sorted soon |

| I had to search "ADA Dietetic". American Dietetic Association?
OK, it's fairly specialized. It's a far different field than I have studied, BUT, UMASS Dartmouth should have courses that will be applicable AND transferable to said specialty. Have a chat with them. UMASS Amherst has a program. I also don't know what level you are looking for. Range is Technician to Masters.
Keep the Faith! I feel your pain as far as distance goes but I chose to live on the beach. |

|
 | Yes, UMASS- AMHERST DOES have the program, but the college is 2hrs and 13mins away, not counting traffic and seeing as how I work 5 days a week, does not fit into the week. The UMASS Program does not work for me because of their requirements:
Admission is based on having a GPA of 2.75 or greater, an advanced degree (M.S., M.D., Ph.D, etc.) in a health-related area or status as a Registered Dietitian OR 3-5 years of relevant post-bachelor's experience and two courses in nutrition. (which doesn't make any sense to me. If I had an advanced health care degree or was already working as an RD why would I need their program? )
You might also want to check out other distance learning programs on the American Dietetic Association's website: »www.eatright.org »www.eatright.org/students/educat···ams.aspx
Kind regards,

 | reply to capecoddah I have contacted the Mass. Board of Higher Education about not being authorized distance education from the Arizona program and am waiting for them to get back with me today as the person I spoke with on the phone was going to discuss my issue (not being a resident here and no programs available here are available to me due to starting out as a non-degree holder not working in the health care field) and he turned information over to Director. |

| reply to thesimonsens I wish I could help more. I do know that 15-30 years ago I had a few Mil-Spec wives in my classes. Some kinda deal. (UMass, and community).
Check Rhode Island too. To the best of my limited knowledge, you get some kinda pass being a Mil-Wife as far as residency goes. Ask Uncle Sam. |

You're enrolling in an online program from the University of Alabama. You want to sign up to take prerequisite courses online from Rio Salado or one of a number of other schools, all in Arizona.
Why do you think that Massachusetts has any involvement in this at all?
They have control of degree-granting institutions who operate in and under the control of Massachusetts. Your selections don't fit that restriction.
You should be able to treat this the same as physically moving to Alabama, and taking online Arizona courses that Alabama allows.
Or is there some other factor that involves Massachusetts, such as funding? |

Looks really nice from the Braga Bridge on 195. I'll probably see it in a couple of weeks, on the way east and back.
Agreed that OP should see if mil wives are exempt. MA is kind of nanny-state-y sometimes. They think they're doing it for your own good. |

|
 | We do wish we would have moved there, but we only have a yr left here so no point in now breaking lease and having to put 1st, last and security down plus deposits for utilities elsewhere. |
|
 | reply to Miataman Ok, I don't actually, "hate" it here. That is a strong word which I shouldn't have used.
What I don't LIKE about MA is how so many people in this state are impatient when on the roads and ride your ass dangerously close. I don't like how this state leans so much to the side of wanting everyone to give them everything for doing nothing. I don't like the taxes and fees for everything here.
I DO like the scenery, the distance to get to so many different places, the variety of amazing restaurants, and that neighbors mind their own business. |

If you're not driving 10-15 over the limit, you're going too slow.
** notable exceptions to 10-15 over rule:
-In known undermarked speed zones [if the traffic seems to be totally ignoring the marked speed limit, that's how you know], simply ignore the posted limit.
-In Worcester, keep it 5 over or less. Worcester cops sometimes think they're in rural Ohio or Indiana. |
|
 | You have to do 85 in a construction zone along 24 to stay with flow of traffic and people still ride my tail! So irritating |
