Chance to upgrade?, need input

So, have a 4 core AMD Black Edition now, with 16gb Ram. Do game, all types. Starting to get into a lot of video editing and encoding with Sony Vegas now.

Have a chance to move to a AMD 8 core with 8gb Ram. Do believe the Ram is faster then what I have now.

Rest of the system will stay the same (other than the motherboard) - power supply I have will work for new CPU.

Worth it?

Would be no cost - basically a trade out.

What ram are you moving to? Odds are the ram speed (i.e. from DDR3 1333mhz to DDR3 1600mhz) would be minimal and you would probably benefit from the extra RAM, either to prevent a bottleneck or to even use the extra ram as a ramdisk.

What amd cpu, what 4core amd now.

If it was intel we could say YES! but it is amd, the 8core amd could be slower than the older 4core (rofl).

8core amds lost IPC vs the older ones (bad for games)

So give us more specs and we can help you better.

The only thing beating Bulldozer gaming wise was Thuban (1090T, 1100T) with heavy overclocks.

If you are going to do multithreaded application do the trade with no doubts, Bulldozers is great for that and will beat Deneb . You can always get more RAM when needed it is really cheap.

It's a downgrade for gaming, and a sidegrade for everything else. Keep your ram and throw it on the new board.

If you're buying a new mobo, get an Intel i5-2500K. AMD messsed up hard with FX Bulldozer--they even miscounted the number of transistors on it, claiming it had 2bill when it had 1.2bill. IMO you shouldn't be looking at AMD CPUs if you plan to game.

Thanks for the input. Gamign will see no real change. So not really consurned there. Its the video part I was looking at the most. Just did not know if losing 8gb of ram would really make a big diff. Sounds like it will not.

Think I might take the trade. And your right, can always upgrade the ram. And will do some oc of the cpu. Guess it has a very heavy am cooler.

Thanks!

You did post this in PC gaming tech, you know. Bulldozer would be an overall upgrade for video encoding if the program is multithreaded.

I still have no idea why you would trade 16GB of DDR3 1333mhz for 8GB DDR3 1866mhz.

I doubt you would see a difference.

Here is an 8150...

idk if I would want to lose ram however, only you know how much you are using, myself, I can use 11gigs so 16 to 8 for me is bad.

I guess for free... meh... if you are paying...

Intel hands down.

That is what I needed. Wanted to get input from both sides, gaming and video encoding.

Want flaming? Here it is:

Why on EARTH would you waste the money on bulldozer? For the same price (roughly) you could change over to a 2600k (8 thread processor) and a new motherboard that supports lucid virtu technology (quick sync) that dramatically beefs up movie encoding times.

The 2600k also wrecks everything in sight when it comes to games.

There really is ZERO contest right now out there in the CPU world for consumers (servers is a different story) while Sandy Bridge is afoot and Bulldozer is the best AMD has. Don't believe me? Check the benchmarks. The 2600k eats the highest Bulldozer for breakfast.
