Re: An Indi launches IPTV said by mlerner:Yeah all of 10 customers next to the CO can get it. Loop length has to be under 3500 ft (1066.6 m) for full 35/5 VDSL profile or 15/2 ADSL2+ Some add a safety margin and limit it to 800m. Too close can have effects too. I cant see doing IPTV though on 15/2 because of how much bandwidth an iptv stream requires.
For DSL type services most are well over 3 or 4000m (myself I am 5500) and well beyond the range of what ANY indi with their own equipment out can do for next-gen. Most ADSL2+ Can do is give you a decent lower-middle sync speed on long loop lengths (as in 5/1 or 6/1 depending on where you are) |

It not hard to upgrade your sole set of CO equipment as a part of your buisness costs to the highest available. Especially if you only have ONE CO you operate out of.
For an ISP like MNSi or Primus (though they have experimented as has Nexicom) unless your doing remotes or running "trials" in small areas per CO its a far more complicated network because your footprint is that much larger. |

| reply to oh LOOK Are they offering it only on their colo equipment, or are they also now using Bell's GAS 25/7 service to broaden their footprint? That's what Bell is using for FibeTV in Montreal, so if they an offer it over that footprint as well, it gives them a bigger base to sell to. The article states 375k households, so that would be more than a few CO colos, I would think. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreams learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars Join Team Helix

 | reply to andyb said by andyb:A couple or 3 co-lo's does not really make an indi. If you look at their coverage map, they are in about a dozen different COs on Montreal Island, enough to reach about half the population on it.
This may not be much but it is still infinitely more than most other "indies" who have absolutely no DSLAMs of their own. |

With the new capacity based rates, it would be impossible to offer it through GAS. This would have to be on their own co-located DSLAMs only. -- MNSi Internet - »www.mnsi.net |

 | Re: An Indi launches IPTV said by Great Price :The triple play service at 49.95 is a great price.
When you look at their phone and unlimited ADSL2+, »colba.net/main.php?lang=en&cont=resvoip, IPTV is added for only 5$!
Bundling is also something the resellers can't do. The most the resellers can hope for, and what they have always planned on doing, is just reselling Bell. The triple play $49.95 price is probably a prepaid 1 year price because the prepaid 1 year for internet ADSL2+ = $19.95. The VOIP price = $10. IPTV price starting at $19.95.
Don't forget you have to pay another $10 for dryloop fee. So minimum = $60 for prepaid 1 year price.
For monthly price,
Combo VOIP + ADSL2+ = $44.95 Minimum IPTV package = $19.95 Dryloop fee = $9.95 Total = $74.85
Activation fee = $70 for ADSL2+ and $18.91 for dryloop
If you choose higher IPTV package, you will pay higher price. So it is not cheap anymore. |

3. Combo VOIP + ADSL2+ = $44.95 Minimum IPTV package = $19.95 Dryloop fee = $9.95 Total = $74.85 1. Well yeah. It's 1 year prepaid. They even stated so.
2. So 49.95 + band rate (~10$) = 59.95$
3. The state $49.95 for the triple play bundle (IPTV, Phone + unlimited internet). *NOT* 44.95$ + 19$. The bundle cost comes to 49.95 for all 3 services. Not sure where you are getting 44.95 + 19.95
As far as the activation goes, it about the same if not better than Bells own activation, or what the bell resellers are charging, or what is in the latest CRTC filings that is about to be imposed.
Show me less expensive unlimited up to 24-meg for 3 services that includes IPTV.
Then show me an Indi's equivalent offering with IPTV, Phone and Unlimited 24+meg.
Aside from Bell itself, show me an Indi ISP who is absorbing both the DSL band-rate and the greater than 8-meg DSL setup costs. |

This would have to be on their own co-located DSLAMs only. Yes, but transit is cheap enough that they could offer it as a generic Internet service. The ironic thing with IPTV is that there isn't anybody actually offering IPTV over the Internet. It's always locked into internal ISP networks.
There's very little info in their press release about it, though, and no mention of the IPTV service on their website. -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |

GuspazGuspazPremium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC kudos:16 | reply to hm said by hm :Show me less expensive unlimited up to 24-meg for 3 services that includes IPTV. Nobody actually gets 24 meg from Colba. You have to be living in the CO to get a 24 meg sync with ADSL2+. Yes, you can theoretically be up to something like 800m to get that speed, but that assumes lab-perfect line conditions. In practice you've got to be able to spit on the CO from your back porch to get 24-meg sync.
They might claim to have coverage of 375k people, but in reality, the number of people who are close enough to one of those COs to get a high enough sync rate to support decent IPTV on top of Internet services is much lower. Not that that will stop Colba from trying to sell IPTV to people with 3 meg syncs, it's not like they have any scruples. -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |
