Dead modem

My mom has the basic, lowest-tier DSL, and the modem died. (Called tech support - confirmed solid red Power light means it's DOA.) The tech was saying I have to buy a new one, but customer service was closed at the time.

So I called CS today and sure enough they only warranty the modems for 1 year and they will be happy to sell her a replacement for $75.

Looks like the model to get is the Motorola 2210. Any issue with me just buying one (for cheaper than $75) and swapping it myself? Anything I need to know? (is there a more specific model #, anything special about hooking up the new one, etc.)

TIA

P.S. She just has a single, wired PC. No need for wireless, extra ports, or any fancy features.

What is the make and model of the original modem? Have you tried substituting another power supply? The modem itself may not be bad.

Here (»[Modem] Reasonable life span of Motorola 2210-02-1002?) is an example of someone who was ready to pay for a new modem and then found that a new power supply was all that was required to restore the old modem to operation.

Siemens SpeedStream 4100 B.
Do you know where I can find a brick that would work?

BTW the unit does get power - it cycles through its checks, lights turn green, and actually works briefly. IOW I can ping 192.168.0.1 for the first minute or two. Then all the lights go dark except for the Power light which stays solid red.

Here's a picture of a 4100 power supply

You can find a compatible modem at most retailers
Try ebay for a direct replacement
If you are unsure about a potential purchase post the full model number of the choice

I tried a different 12v 500mA adapter, and same symptoms.

Looking around it seems the Netopia 2210-02 is the same as the Motorola. Anything special I need to do to get it connected? Is it already configured for PPPoE?

Motorola purchased netopia.....the gui of the 2210-02-1002 and 2210-02-1022 have the same gui as the 4100b

Re: Dead modem

Thanks for the answers/feedback. My mom is back up and running.

I wasn't about to pay $75 to AT&T for something they only guarantee for a year, so I found a refurbished Motorola 2210-02. Only $20 out the door ($15 + shipping), and it came with all the cables and even 4 DSL filters. No problems setting it up and I saved her 55 bucks.
