Re: [Anime] Winter 2011/2012 Preview guide up

said by Kearnstd:

So how do most people here in the US consume Anime? I have started to poke around the stuff a bit and have noticed some good series are not available here.(I have tried finding Macross: Frontier which I hear is well made)

Am I accurate in that many shows are tied up in IP rights issues?

That show was never licensed, like most Macross related shows Harmony Gold (creators of Robotech) hold the rights of Macross and they don't want it competing with their own product.

But I'm sure fan subs are available.

A show getting caught up like that does happen sometime but not that often. Usually if a series' license expires and it's a good series that will make money then someone else will pick up the rights. Such has happened with shows like Utena and Initial D recently.

As for where you can get anime, there are legal streaming services that offer next-day sub broadcasts or sub and dub services for a monthly fee. Some anime is available on Netflix. Or you can pick up the DVD/blu ray.

Crunchyroll is a favourite here for streaming as they always license good anime and stream in HD quality.

The Anime Network has been around for a while, but they don't always do current anime and don't do a lot of current anime when they do. Other options are popping up of late such as FUNimation and NicoNico. The negative with both is they don't offer HD streams, although it looks like NicoNico is developing a new interface so that may include HD streams.

The one negative with streaming is the streams will almost always be the censored version. Take High School DxD for example. The show is shown almost fully uncensored, but FUNimation made sure to grab the censored version with DxD bats covering the bits. Of course this doesn't only apply to ecchi, as gore scenes will be blackened as a form of censorship.

Physical media wise I shop at RightStuf as they offer the cheapest anime. They always have a sale going 1-2 weeks for one company. This week they're selling Sentai anime for cheap.

Man, this week was a tear-jerker one for a couple of my favorites, Fairy Tail and Guilty Crown. Some sad stuff there.

I'd forgotten to mention Guilty Crown, as it's really continuing from last season, but it's a pretty good story and should be watched.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko's 13th episode "special" was released the other day. I really wish this series would have more, there is potential there, as well as unresolved relationships. I don't know why I like this series so much, but it's just really good. I like the way the girls are drawn "super cute" - the way their faces shine and all. Anyway, it's worth a look.

I've been behind past few weeks, plan to catch up this weekend, but I was able to watch Gokujo just now as it's only 5m per episode.

Quite a funny show, and really how shows should be done. There's barely any ecchi even though it seemed like it would be pure ecchi. The themes are suggestive, but that's about it.

The first episode was banned, but the worst that happens is pulling down of panties, and you don't see anything. There's absolutely little to zero ecchi content.

Seriously enjoying this, just wish it was longer than 5m.

Just watched Black*Rock*Shooter #1 + 2 over the weekend, and damn, this is pretty neat! Different from the OAV that came out a month or so ago, but still, I'm digging it. Talk about your marketing machine though, have you seen the figures for this? I could seriously go broke buying them if not for the fact the wife would kill me. I'd love to try the PSP game, but I think it's got lots of dialogue in it, so it's likely no go for me. Anyway, check it out, as it's a got it's dark tones in it.

The game is alright. The pace of it is pretty damn slow for me. Not overly impressed with the battle system either. The game should have an english release one of these days.

Season is about 3/4 done for many shows. Plenty of great shows this season. Thought I would throw this out there as an update. More later.

Another: I was afraid this was going to be lame, but damn if it's probably the best one of the season, I've seen some unique deaths in anime, but this show has them locked down. You actually find yourself cringing watching this wondering who is going to get it next, and how it's gonna happen. If you haven't seen this one yet, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Another is good, but some of the deaths are starting to get to me. I mean the last one...

Honestly, what did he expect swimming out in the ocean? It was a little too obvious for me. Most of the deaths have been interesting, but this last one was just too obvious and too unrealistic. I mean why when all that is going on would you swim that far out into the ocean!

Well, not all is as it seems to that one, you need to watch this weeks episode for that to make sense. Then of course, you get to play the "Who dies how?" game again.

I find myself saying "Oh mygod!" a lot to this anime, because even though you're EXPECTING it, it's the way its delivered that keeps you hanging.

Yeah, I like the other deaths, such as the teacher in front of the class, but that last one really had me in the dumps.

Just watched episode 11 on CR, and I just can't help but think that they're just trying to come up with different ways to kill someone here. Sheesh.

"Misaki! Who's the dead one?" "The dead one is......" *crash* - chase - ummm, you know, you never told me who that dead one was, but for some off reason I don't think to friggin ASK you again..... ugh.

Next week is the end.

Another ended yesterday, and while I guessed the "dead one" right before the end, it was quite the plot twist.

The only issue I had with the episode was while most of the deaths throughout the series were believable, you just have to realize that were they actually in that building, they would've all died from heat/smoke/fire...... seriously. But you can totally see people reacting that way in the same situation.

All in all though, it was a pretty good series to watch.

Brave 10: Not a bad ending, though the series should've been longer IMO since it just felt rushed. I would've liked to have seen some development on some of the characters, like Isanami's power. There was more story there, but it was lost due to lack to time. Still a good series. They leave you thinking there may be another series with the way it ends.

I've really gotten into Aquarion EVOL. I don't remember the original Aquarion, but it doesn't matter. This series, while full of innuendo, and fanservice in spots, isn't a bad story. It's not ORIGINAL in storytelling, but it's not a bad thing.

I've been watching Witchblade and Corpse Princess on Funimation. Witchblade I understand because I used to read the comic books. I'm pretty lost trying to figure out CP, though.

Season is ending/ended. What did you think?

Overall, several series were great. High School DxD turned out far better than I thought it would. I think it could've been an even better show without all the gratuitous fanservice, but in the end, you can see past it and find a decent series.

One series I missed but just watched all the way through, Ano Natsu de Matteru, alamarco mentioned it in the beginning of the thread and I had totally missed it up to last Friday. The wife and I watched it all the way through, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. The ending could've been better, but it fit ok. Not your typical "Boy likes girl, girl likes other boy" scenario. All in all, It does stand as one of the better series for the season. One o them mens in black and shit.

Another, as I said before, is a MUST SEE for horror fans. This one was my favorite of the season.

Amagami SS Plus, like the first season, the majority of this was kinda *yawn*, but some were better than others.

Black Rock Shooter: Short and sweet, and visually amazing along the way.

Aquarion EVOL, I'm digging this series, the story isn't original, but it really doesn't have to be. We dig giant robots. NICE!

New season starts now.......

I watched 3 series for this season.

Another which I echo was a good series, I enjoyed it.
Recorder to Randoseru Stupid show where it repeats the same gags over and over. I'm still watching it though, after all it is only 3 minutes long what do I have to lose but 3 minutes.
Daily Lives of High School Boys I pray to who ever the Japanese worship that this isn't an accurate representation of a true high school boys/girls. Some of it I would find to be "normal" some of the other stuff was just creepy. I didn't really find it funny either. meh.

I only watched the first Daily Lives of Highschool Boys, it just didn't do anything for me. I REALLY enjoyed You and Me last season, and season 2 started this season. (yes!)
