Re: HDTV and Time Warner Cable Basic Questions Hey guys. So i just bought an antenna. It was an RCA Antenna but it was a cheap one. Got it for $8.20 on amazon. The reason for this was b/c many other people said this works just as good as those $40 ones. There was a very good one i saw on amazon for $40 but i got this just to see it first.
When i plugged it in, i got lot of local channels. However, can someone tell me why i don't have NBC HD, FOX HD, CW11 HD? The only HD channels i got HD are CBS and ABC.
1. Is it because my antenna isn't that good? I also put my antenna on the back of my TV to get a better signal. I live in apartment building so there isn't any of those obstructions that i should have.
2. Also, i also some weird channels as well that i didn't have when i was in analog mode with my basic cable. Can someone explain this? Would getting the $40 Antenna most likely mean i would mean i get NBC HD, FOX HD, CW11 HD AND channel 9 HD?
3. Also... when i took the antenna plug off and tried to watch tv.... there is nothing at all. Like when tv opened, its blank. Does that mean an HDTV must require either an antenna or cable wire?
4. I also have another television in another room but its those big CRT tv. Does that mean i also need an antenna in that TV if i were to cancel my basic cable in order to get basic channels?
5. So getting an antenna is 100% necessary whether my tv is hdtv or an old CRT tv right if i want to watch fox? Even if i get another antenna for my other tv, it wouldn't look hd because thats an old crt TV correct?
I had planned to get the antenna so i would cancel my basic cable bill even though its only $22 a month since i don't watch much anymore.
Thanks. |

 | Okay so right now i just unplugged the cable wire from my CRT TV and plugged the antenna wire in. However... the TV does not work at all. Its basically all grey and buzzing if you get what i mean. Is there a reason for this? What am i doing wrong with my other CRT tv? |

 | I don't see scanning on my remote control for my old CRT TV. I scanned on my Hdtv and that worked.
MY CRT TV is like 10 years old. I don't see scan on the remote control. |

 | Is that audio to digital convertor? I checked and i see it cost $40 on amazon. Would you say its better to get a new TV than buy this?
Would my crt tv view HD though with this? |
|
 | Seriously, you never heard of the Digital television transition? The public service announcements that kept saying you needed a digital (ATSC) tuner for OTA only played non-stop for about 2 years. |

Would my crt tv view HD though with this? No, those boxes are digital (ATSC) to analog (NTSC) TV converter boxes. Analog transmissions over the air have ended a number of years ago but a lot of Cable/Satellite systems provide it on the cable for older TV units. See »www.dtv.gov/
In your situation it seems that your provider chosen not do down convert to older NTSC on the cable and thus you need a converter box for each old TV. Your new TV has an ATSC tuner built-in so it does not need a converter box.
If you really want HDTV picture instead of the scaled down picture provided by the converter boxes you will need a new TV. |

 | I haven't watched much TV but yes i heard about that change but it didn't affect me because i had basic cable.
Another quick question. I'm going to cancel my basic cable service. I called and they told me if i were to do that, it does not affect my Road Runner Internet rate of 29.99. He told me that i would then i have to return those 2 cable boxes back to Time Warner Cable.
They told me i could do this by mailing it back to them, going to nearest Time Warner Cable place and return it. Or have a technician come and pick it up free of charge. Do you guys have any preference with with one? I'm going to most likely go to the Time Warner Building since its not too far from where i live. Also, i think having a technician come over might be a nuisance as I won't be home at certain time? Would like to know which would be the best option.
Also, i asked him does he know how much it would cost in installation fees if i get back time warner cable in the future and he seemed to not know. Does anyone know the pricing for this? Does it depend on if i get time warner cable basic or the regular package? Also, a few years back i had the regular time warner package where i paid $73 a month. When i changed to the basic cable, do they always come to your house to take back those boxes?
I don't remember what happened a few years ago. Do they usually just come and take back your boxes but then give you basic cable boxes? Just trying to remember what happened a few years back. |

| Your best bet is to return the boxes, *GET A RECEIPT* and keep the receipt. When you went from digital cable to basic cable, the boxes were not picked up unless you requested this option. As has been pointed out, you probably need a cable box to get the best signal.
If you install cable again, the normal install charge is a $40.95 truck trip and $20.95 outlet activation for each additional tv. Sometimes there are promotions. A tech has to come to your home, since there is no flipping of a switch in the office even though you previously had service.
After you cancel the service, you are no longer a TWC tv subscriber but hopefully your neighbor can assist with your reception problems! |
