lr03 join:2011-12-10 Somerville, MA | [Speed] [Boston] Slow Internet speed; Incorrect provisioning? Hello all,
I recently signed up for the 20/2 plan, but am consistently seeing anywhere from 2 to 7 Mbps up and around 500 K down, using ma.speedtest.rcn.net. The friendly tech support folks were nice but not terribly helpful -- ran me through the usual routine of "power cycle your modem and talk to your computer manufacturer".
Swapped out the modem for a brand-new RCN-provided Cisco, with no impact on anything.
Also, just noticed that the speedtest website says: "Downstream Limit: 7600000", but I know right before I called tech support this morning it was at 20.
Finally, speedtest says DOCSIS 3.0 is available, but I gather my current modem is 2.0, and the RCN rep at the local location said they only give out 3.0 modems if you're on 40M and higher, which I'm not.
Encoded MAC is 441e70a7e909b2c27f7e8434751e72b3385efd66
Any thoughts or help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks! |

 | Re: [Speed] [Boston] Slow Internet speed; Incorrect provisioning I got my internet installed by RCN in Somerville MA yesterday (9th) and have been getting 2M down / 500K up. The tech that came back today told me that his supervisor reports there is a problem at the head office effecting internet speeds in Somerville - something they know about and are working on. No idea if this is true or how long it will take to fix. - This is my result after the 1st tech rewired the connection to my whole house and rebooted the modem multiple times. Only thing local he _didn't_ do was swap out for a new modem.
I do know of at least 1 other home in Somerville getting more like 20M down / 2M up. |

lr03 join:2011-12-10 Somerville, MA | Thanks. Interestingly enough, the provisioning issue has been fixed, and at least for now speed has picked up as well. I guess I'll stay tuned.
And yes, RCN's phone message keeps referring to routing issues around Boston. Definitely seeing those, too. |

1 edit | Me too - my speed picked up to 17M/2M.

Re: [Speed] [Boston] Slow Internet speed; Incorrect provisioning Another phone message tonight about routing and connectivity problems. I'm also seeing about 2-2.5mbps down on a nominally 20mbps connection.

2 edits | mine has been very slow the past 3-4 weeks now (download speeds average about 1Mbps). Upload speeds are fine however (~2Mbps). It used to fluctuate between 2-12Mbps download, but now i never get more than 1.5 Mbps, and downloading anything is noticeably slow.

*edit* last night I unplugged my modem for a few min, plugged it back in. since then speeds have been better (6-10 down / 2 up). Still not ever close to 20, but anything over 5 is good.
*update 1/4/12: mine has been pretty awful the past few days, maybe even a week. not sure it is related at all but ever since i got a voicemail from RCN (early Dec?) saying everyone would be upgraded to 20Mb/2Mb for free my service has been terrible. i don't really notice unless the DL is less than ~6Mbps but the past few days the speed tests have told me the DL is only 0.3Mbps and most sites even fail to load at all and timeout. A month of constant problems (every other day or so) is growing tiresome... |

 | I have been a RCN customer for 10 years, and I have always noticed a drop in connection speed at peak times (between 7 and 10 PM), but it has been getting worse for the past two years. When I had the 10mbps down 768kbps up, I use to get anywhere from 2 to 5 mbps down, and 300kbps up, and at it's worse was 100kps down and 200up... now with the new 20mbps down and 2mbps up I average 4 mbps up and a steady 1.80mbps up, I am tired of rebooting the modem, I even bought a new router, thinking that my Dlink was too old and just wasn't working as it should, no change. Last Friday I did a complete power cycle, unplugged the cable and power and let it sit for 30 minutes, once I rebooted i was able to get back up to 14mbps and 2 mbps, but it was short lived as it quickly dropped back down 2 mbps down, up stayed the same. But what it's killing me is the latency, at its best it used to be 27ms (awesome for online gaming) at its worse 140ms, on average I get 70ms, not good at all. My sister lives pretty much next door to me and she also has RCN, and she experiences the same problem. Is this ever going to be corrected? Is RCN throttling their speeds at peak times?
Furthermore I found out that I am still being charge $60 for the 20/2 service, will be making another call monday to try and correct this.
Sorry for the long post, but I am getting very frustrated with this situation.

Thanks for the update, I think you'll be in better shape this evening than you were last night. We moved another channel into your area that we had available and that should double up the capacity. Although mostly I found a slight miss configuration in the load balancing that might have prevented the cmts from correctly moving modems to balance out during peak hours. This has been corrected. -- Bryan Laird RCN Engineering |

 | That is good news, i'll have to test it again tonight. Thanks for the update. |
|
 | It's looking better tonight. Latency? meh, could be better, but....I'll take it.

Thank you. |

 | Just a little update on the speed issue (there was no point starting a new thread) Tonight it has been bad, it is like before the addition of the channel. Until now it has been pretty good, in the 12 to 17 mbps down, but yesterday and today it has been acting up, power cycling did not help.

negativeduckPremium,VIP join:2002-02-14 Centreville, VA kudos:1 | I appreciate the effort, but I do need you to test off the RCN MA server. As it is there was no bandwidth issue at the same time and I had other customers on the same interface moving at ~15mbps. I can't account for all traffic and when you test locally I get a nice snapshot. -- Bryan Laird RCN Engineering |

 | Thank you for replying, I'll try again tonight using the RCN MA server, but I find the RCN speed test to be a bit inaccurate, as there is times the RCN test will show speeds at 10 mbps and speedtest.net shows 7 mbps or less, it would be great if I were to play online locally only, but I don't, that is virtually impossible, so I have to test latency and speed using other servers and speedtest.net is the best way. I understand that the speed results has a lot to do with the bandwidth of the server being tested (pinged) so it may not always be RCN's side fault. |

Re: [Speed] [Boston] Slow Internet speed; Incorrect provisioning slight change tonight (for the better) 9.7mbps down and a full 2mbps up (according to RCN's speed test), speedtest.net says otherwise, latency still killing me...
